I didn't even glance at that poll past page 1. I knew they'd say Jimi Hendrix was #1, so I can pretty much tell you where it would go from there.
Not saying Hendrix wasn't fantastic...just saying he's not #1 in my book. No way I'd put him ahead of Les Paul, but that's just me.
These lists are subjective...it all depends on the individual's tastes as to who is the top 100...but maybe I'm just reading too much into this.
Personal favorites of mine like Scotty Moore, Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Cliff Gallup...I'd be surprised if any of 'em(besides Chet) are even on that list.
Whatever... |

i agree w/ Gilmour needing to be higher on the list, and i may be way off here but didn't Roger Waters write most of the songs?...i'm just thinking aloud about that but maybe they're going mostly for Dave's solo's and stuff, which warrant a higher spot on their own in any case...idk much of the technical side of Pink Floyd but Rogers seemed like the dominant personalty/total prick of the group...
and to those confused about Jack White being so high on the list, he brought raunchy blues and rock guitar back into the mainstream conscience in the middle of rap/b&b/hip hop's dominance of mainstream stereos...oh and RS is biased... |

I still think some are taking this too seriously.
Rolling Stone proved to me years ago that they know nothing about music (anymore), so I damn sure knew they wouldn't know anything about musicians.
Plus I think you guys are late on this. I hate to say it, but the last time I saw a similar list of Top Guitarists, by a guitar magazine (just not sure which one), Kurt Cobain was in the top 10-20 there too, and it wasn't the first time I have seen this happen, as pretty much every Top Guitarist list since 1998 has had Kurt Cobain in there. He has influenced a lot of people to play, but he just does't play that well... |

Well, yes, I think you do have a point there Zerks... While not a huge Floyd fan myself, I do think Gilmour has influenced my playing, and not meaning to upset Sonic Youth fans... but... he does belong higher on that list than them (he is an awesome guitarist). And yeah, there are some oddities in that list...
Maybe we should make some sort of bossarea collective list.... everyone list their top 5 or something, then we could add up the votes? Ok, so that's probably a bit time consuming and fraught with problems but that magazine list is a bit rubbish...
I'm sure there's some who'd disagree, but I do think Hendrix belongs at number one (he's an obvious choice, but that's for a reason). At least they got that right IMHO. |

LOL that list/article is crap.
After reading the list, the article might be better retitled the most "Popular" or "Recognizable" guitarists, not the "best" guitarists.
Kurt Cobain at No12 is proof that, Pete Townsend #50??? Jimi Hendrix #1, I think not; his career was sadly far too short to warrant the #1 spot all things considered; yes he contributed to a different approach on the guitar and was no doubt gifted, but his overal contribution, just doesn't count for #1.

Gee, a music magazine basing its content off of hype and popularity, and not talent or ability...The horror, the horror...This is the first time any such thing has been done in the world of music journalism...and if you believe that it is, I got this land for sale you might be interested in...
I think the Guitar World top 100 metal guitarist list is worse...How the hell does CC DeVille get listed at 34 and Nigel Tufnel 23, while Joe Satriani is 77, then Hendrix 12 for metal and Neil Young at 85? Jason Becker ranks 40, and below CC in what world? And this is supposed to be a GUITAR magazine? Rolling Stone's list, I can see being messed up because its a MUSIC magazine, not necessarily by or for musicians, but Guitar World... http://blogcritics.org/music/article/guitar-worlds-100-greatest-metal-guitarists/ |
