Hi, I have 'small' problem with my FDR-1...Today, I used it for the first time with a battery and it doesn't work anymore - led just dimes orange At least I decided to open it and I realised that one of the transistors sealed with silicone stuff is fried (it's visibly burned from the other side of the circuit board) it's the Q18 thing and also the nearby R123 seems to be a bit too black
I bought it off eBay couple of months ago and it worked just fine with my adapter until now - it's too late to complain to the seller and I'm not so sure about warranty (I bought it in the UK, it should have 5 years warranty but I never register stuff I buy)
I remember the pedal came in original box and papers with round RED sticker on both paper box and pedal unit. Does it mean anything?
Is there anything I could do about that? I'm visiting this forum once a while and have a small collection myself and I hope there might be someone with some ideas. I managed to do couple of mods (Monte Allums) and would probably manage to fix that with spare parts available but I have no clue what could I do now... Contact Roland? Forget it and get a new one? I really liked what that thing did. Any help would be appreciated. (yes, I know I should have checked it with battery straight away and I did so with all the other pedals I get off eBay )
Nice place this one btw. |

Hi Robo.
Welcome to the forum from Australia.
Sounds like your FDR-1 was exposed to reverse voltage or Rev. Volts & Over volts. Or perhaps even AC instead of DC voltages.
You might have to upload some pictures.
Be aware, & I'm pretty sure no-one here, has Schematics of the FDR-1 or the FDR-1.
But that doesn't mean that they are un-fixable.
How are your soldering & De-soldering skills when it comes to SMD/SMT components? And do you have the right kind of soldering Iron & gear? Also remember that these pedals are RoHS & use Lead Free Solders).
Regards Dr. Bob |

Hi Robo and welcome!
I have fixed a SMD version CE-5 (without a schematic) that had been blown up because of reverse volts. Took about 4 hours and while it works now, it is still not quite right.
Pics please. |

| It might be worth calling your local Roland subsidiary and ask them if it's covered by the warranty. Don't say you opened it up. Just tell them that it doesn't work anymore. The pedal hasn't been made for 5 years yet so they may not care about original receipts or where you bought it. |

Thank you so very much for your help, this is great forum indeed! I did some pictures (they might also help anyone who'd like to have a look at FDR-1 guts...).

Dr.Bob - Cheers for welcome, hope you're allright with all that bush fires down there! My soldering skills are pretty much average, I managed to do some basic 'follow these foolproof instructions' MODS, but I have no real clue why / what / where / how much (I only say WTF!!? sometimes). This pedal seems to be way too complex...
Laurie - well that's I'm afraid of: that the pedal won't be quite right anymore...
bossarea - oh yes, I dropped a line to the UK Boss support that I have this pedal that doesn't work but I have no warranty, they gave me address of some local shop so that's exactly what I'm gonna try... And of course I did not open it!
Thanks again! |
