I havn't trIed that one yet, but I do have a Black liquerish( God I'm sure I spelled that wrong!)floating around somewhere, great scooped mids and an octave effect you could kick in. Sounded great! Their Cool Cat chorous kills also. |

I have one. It's a good sounding pedal for a cheap wee think. Much of the Danelectro stuff is very good. The diecast pedals are just too big and heavy for their own good.
I have...
Plastics.... FAB Metal
Diecast.... Fab Tone Daddy-O Black Paisley Blue Paisley
The black Paisley's like a better version of the FAB metal, with an 'octave lower' switch. The 'octace lower' switch isn't good for turning on and off in a live situation.

I piced a FAB Metal up in a pawn store for cheap. It's sitting in front of my Fender sounding pretty darn good. Does a credible (cheap) Santana and a credible (thin) Acca Dacca. It's all good for a $10 pedal |

| I have a Fab Echo unit that is excellent bang for the buck. It's only preset at about 75ms or so, so you only get a really quick slap, but for that it does a great job. All for about fifteen bucks. |

I grabbed for absolutely free two Fab Tone pedals (a Distortion+ type circuit with more gain and active EQ). One had the 9-volt battery leak inside, and the other a friend just handed it to me after I said I was looking to buy cheap and non-working pedals (we're still friends). Well, I found a while ago (but it ain't there now ) somebody's Fab Tone mod page. So, after doing all the lower gain/less top end mods, it actually is very usable. I did one up with LED's for the clipping, tweaked the EQ differently, so now I have two different sounding Fab Tones! Neither will replace your OCD, but apparently you can buy them for maybe $40 or $50 tops. That's a bargain that I probably just blew the lid off of.

I have one "fab tone" just like your pic. A friend gave it to me as well, and I find that it does the one fuzzy buzzy sound quite well; would be interested to learn of potential mods to this thing.
Post a link or email me at internationalfirewood (at) gmail (dot) com.
Thanks Disco Stu |

Unfortunately, that pages seems to have vanished. I don't know if it was from Wampler or what, but it was written up pretty intensely. There was the theory of the circuit, and some math for bass and treble target frequencies to the tone controls, so that made me think of Brian. But he doesn't just pull stuff off of his postings, does he? I know the schematic is easy to get, and what I wrote for working notes (in a nutshell) was the suggestion of pulling the clipping diodes completely (I did on one pedal; used LED's on another), pulling the gain down by increasing R9 and R14 to 4.7K, or 10K for even less gain, and increasing feedback loop capacitors for less top end. I believe the suggestion was C7, C11, and C21. I think I ended up with 250pF or 500pF. The EQ was revoiced so the bass and treble potentiometers went after different target frequencies, but I didn't really mess with those too much. I pulled C5 completely, and C8 completely on one pedal, but went to a different value on the LED version (if that makes sense). Apparently this really reduced the midrange. Keeping C8 put some back, and a smaller value gave less mids, but you still had more then no C8 at all. That's all I remember. I probably have a dozen overdrives I take turns modding and using at the one gig a month that I do, so by my math in a year I'll use the Fab Tone again, and it'll all come back to me what I like or dislike about it. Or I'll have to start from square one. Again. |
