I remember Tandy... from back in the day when you could go into Dixon's and type cheeky programs into the computers on display (Sinclair Spectrum, anyone?) and buy blank C-15s....
ah, the 80s. If only the kids of today knew...

A pretty good resource of electronic bits and bobs here in England is also called RS but isn't radioshack.... http://uk.rs-online.com/web/
I've used them in the past for components and equipment when assembling some electronics for my dissertation. I remember seeing reasonable priced relevant bits (pedal replacement knobs, switches, leads etc) at the time and if nothing else you should be able to get plenty of good quality cable. It's best to get a good thickness well shielded cable as Laurie says. |

Yep ..Radionics...or RS... we have them as well but to be honest i find ordering off them here is a bit of a pain as you have to fill out order forms and then answer endeless questions as some of the people behind the counter don't seem to know what your looking for especially if your ordering big caps or valves for an amp(can be very off putting for a layman/tinkerer like myself, plus compared to the webshops can be a lot more expensive)... you should of seen the interest from other customers and staff when i bought a load of EL34's,84's and 12AX7's off them last year..in the end when it came to ordering stuff to repair my amps i got it from www.tube-town.net really nice and painless to deal with.....plus he threw in a few chocolate bars with the order..little Franzoni's were very impressed.... .... |

There is absolutely no reason why any cables you make yourself shouldn't be as good as anything you buy, as others have said providing you pick decent quality parts and do a good job. Lets face it, most of the stuff you buy will be constructed from low cost parts and hand soldered and assembled (maybe with some heatshrink in there somewhere if you've gone for a higher price part!) in the far east or eastern europe, so there's no reason why a homebrew cable will be inferior in quality. I use a combination Maplin, RS, Farnell and Rapid. I have also used Banzai effects. RS and Farnell are a bit pricey and often have minimum order quantities. Also check out www.solotechnic.co.uk, good prices but website takes a bit of trawling. Carriage charges also apply to the above if you are spending less than a fair few quid so watch out there. A bit of trawling the forum and checking the links posted in the thread may reveal some better priced deals.
