i bought way too many components to mod pedals so i figured i'd toss some kits together at prices where i just break even and see if anyone is interested.

these are more targeted at those new to or getting into modding as the mod veterans that buy their components in bulk probably get better prices than i did buying 5-10 at a time.

shipping to the USA is $3.00 for first class mail (includes a padded envelope) for any number of kits.

kits will include basic instructions and links to any resources/photos and in depth instructions on the mods i can dig up. basic instructions = replace D6 with an LED, replace C12 with a 1uf cap, etc. they won't include teaching you how to solder/desolder as that info is readily available on the net.

i can include pictures of some of the tricky/confusing parts (e.g. "jumper a cap across the clipping diodes").

if you aren't confident in your soldering i can do some of the trickier pre-mod assemblies for $1 (e.g. mounting them on a small PCB and soldering on lead wires)

i won't be listing any else's commercial kits for sale (unless they've posted them as public knowledge), these are only freebies i've found on the internet. however, if you can dig up the specs to someone's mod feel free to contact me and see if i have the parts available.

Basic item price list:
Metal/Poly cap $0.25
Metal/Poly 1uf cap $0.40
Electrolytic cap $0.25
Silver mica cap $0.80
Ceramic cap $0.25
Resistor $0.20
3mm Red LED $0.35
3mm Ultra-bright LED $0.85
J201 Transistor $0.40
Silicon diode $0.30
Germanium diode $0.60
JRC4558D op amp $0.55
Op amp socket $0.50
1' of 24 ga. wire $0.10 (dont laugh, this stuff costs me like $10 for 100)
Small piece of PCB (up to ~1 x 1) $0.15

i've rated each mod on a difficulty scale from 1 to 5 w/ 5 being most difficult. i've also marked a few of the items that are easily screwed up/damaged so if you want to add an extra 1-2 of those you can.

Distortion DS-1 Seeing Eye Mod (difficulty 3)
3 x 0.1uF metal/poly cap = $0.75
4 x 1 uF metal/poly cap = $1.60
1 x 220 pF silver mica cap = $0.80
1 x 3mm Red LED = $0.35
1 x 20K resistor = $0.20
1 x 1.5K resistor = $0.20
1 x 47pf ceramic cap = $0.25 *easy to screw up
TOTAL: $4.15
Optional:
Substitute 47pf silver mica cap for $0.65 more
Wire to tack down cap (easier than tacking it onto the back of the tracks) $0.10

Distortion DS-1 Ultra Mod (difficulty 4)
Same as SEM $4.15
2 x 0.1 uF metal/poly cap = $0.50
1 x 0.047 uF metal/poly cap = $0.25
1 x Red LED = $0.35
1 x 2.4K resistor = $0.20
TOTAL: $5.45

Super Overdrive SD-1 to Tube Screamer 808 Conversion Mod (difficulty 2)
1 x 10 uF electrolytic cap = $0.25
1 x 10K resistor = $0.20
1 x 100 Ohm resistor = $0.20
1 x JRC4558D Op Amp = $0.55 *can be screwed up
TOTAL: $1.20
Optional:
Wire for jumper on a cap removal (or you can just use the leftover leg of one of the resistors for free) $0.10
Op Amp Socket (allows you to easily switch between chips) $0.50

Super Overdrive SD-1 to Full Drive II Conversion Mod (difficulty 4)
2 x 0.022 uF metal/poly cap = $0.50
1 x 0.1 uF metal/poly cap = $0.25
2 x 1 uF metal/poly cap = $0.80
1 x 2.2K resistor = $0.20
3 x 1N4001 diode = $0.90
2 x 1N34A germanium diode = $1.20
1 x JRC4558D Op Amp = $0.55 *can be screwed up
TOTAL: $4.40
Optional:
Small PCB for diodes (recommended, 1N4001s have thick legs that barely fit through the holes) $0.15
Wire to connect diode PCB to pedal PCB $0.10
Op Amp Socket (allows you to easily switch between chips) $0.50

Super Overdrive SD-1 J201 Bleed Fix Mod (Difficulty 1)

This mod corrects the drive bleed that happens when SD-1s are in bypass mode. Also works for the OD-1. No component removal is needed for this mod. This mod doesn't work well with modded pedals.

1 x J201 JFET transistor = $0.40
1 x 0.1 uF metal/poly cap = $0.25
1 x 1N4148 diode = $0.30
TOTAL: $0.95
Optional:
Small PCB for components $0.15
Wire to tack bleed fix onto pedal PCB $0.10

Super Overdrive SD-1 Laurie Bleed Fix Mod (Difficulty 2)
This mod reduces bleed on SD-1's by about 95% and works with modded pedals.

1 x 100 uF electrolytic cap = $0.25
1 x 1 uF ceramic cap = $0.25
2 x 10K resistors = $0.50
TOTAL: $1.00

TR-2 Tremolo Parity Volume Mod (difficulty 1)
This mod reduces the volume loss when the pedal is activated.
1 x 6.8K resistor $0.20 (or 4.7K resistor if you want a volume boost when it's activated)

Zen -

This is very very cool. I will definitely be taking you up on this. I'm not sure which one I'm interested in though. Indyguitarist published a few free mods here http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/Issue/2008/Feb/Boss_DS_1_Mods.aspx and I may be interested in one of those. I will definitely be interested in something to mod one of my DS-1s though. Also, if you could throw in some solder and de-soldering braid and put the cost onto the tab with the kit that I go with, that would be cool as well.

Fantastic!

i can toss in a little bit of solder and some braid, but my braid is pretty crappy (and i've had it for almost 10 years) and i don't have much left. i could probably include 6" or so w/ ~18" of solder for like $0.25.

i'm a big fan so far of the seeing eye mod. the tone and output changes were primary. the gain voicing difference is cool, but not the biggest part about it.

there's some decent documentation here for a few mods:
http://www.geocities.com/overdrivespider/

as for the indyguitarist mods, i don't have all of the parts for most of those.

e.g. on the jcm marshall mod i have:
3 x 1uf caps
2 x 1N4001 diode
2 x 1N4148 (or 1 if you want to use the other 4148 that's already in there)
i don't have the 15k resistor (i have 10k and 20k, could probably go like 10k + 4.7k in series to get something close) nor the 0.033uf cap (closest i have are 0.047 or 0.022, could probably go 0.022 in parallel with a 0.01uf).

let me know. i can try and fill most of the parts if you want and you could probably pick up some of the more common stuff locally. radio shack now charges like $0.75 ea. for poly caps and $1.49 ea. for metal film caps. their prices on resistors aren't bad (~$0.20-0.25 ea.) but you have to buy em in 5-packs.

blake t.
