Hello, I'm new in these parts. I've become a small-time collector of BOSS pedals... mainly overdrives/distortions.
Anyway, I just picked up a mint MZ-2 with box, manual and pocket dictionary. I use it in two ways - full gain in SGL mode, and gain all the way off in the second chorus mode... kinda like Scofield.
I really like this pedal, but it seems there are many who don't. Can anyone confirm whether the entire signal path is digital, or just the delay/chorus section? The distortion sounds similar to a HM-2 or DS-2 in Turbo I mode to my ears... any opinions welcome! |

AFAIK, the entire thing is digital, even the distortion. I love SGL and DBL I, but i think the chorus sounds are horrible, and the later doubled modes start sounding like a flanger to my ears.
I always wanted one of these though. |

I've heard only the chorus and delay is digital (not saying I know, just that there's both explanations going round), but if you dig it that's hardly a point really.
Out of interest, has anyone ever compared the MZ-2 to an Ibanez Session-man (ss-10/ss-20)? |

If you look at the schematic you will find that it is separated into an analog and digital PCB. Looks to me like the distortion is analog and the other effects are digital. There's no bypassing the digital circuit even if it's in SGL mode. It will just not be modulated on its way through the controller.
Only had a quick look at it so I may be wrong on some accounts |

Interesting, I always thought the distortion was digital as well, which is why so many people hated it...
And from your MZ-2 page:
"Note also that this is a digital distortion pedal. Distortion pedals are normally analog and this is probably the only digital distortion pedal to actually be mass produced. " |

Doh, I thought that to be true when I wrote it. |

I have one, it's one of my 3 dist/OD pedals. In one song I use it for really over-the-top distortion with a tapping rhythm/harmonics thing. And that's played on bass :) I'm not sure, but I've seen to have lost the delay/chorus effect on it, need to sit down with it. |
