Gag... I just can't see these things still working in 20 years time.

I've been looking for an SG and I had the chance to avoid trying out a robot one the other day.

I know what you mean.. I'm old school.

I'll bet we're missing out on some decent guitars though with the VG Strat & Gibson robots. Oh, & the new Epiphone.

I know companies like Gibson,Fender,Boss/Roland etc.... especially Boss want to develop new things and technologies as well as what their famous for but guitar players are notoriously conservative when it comes to this stuff.... were still using tube technology and analog effect devices for the most part for making music.... I know if i was offered the choice of any Gibson in the factory i would probably go for a LP Goldtop with a couple of P90's or maybe '59 335 reissue but it certainly wouldn't be any robotic guitars... Gibson tried a lot of new ideas with the Les Paul in the 70's with active pickups and suchlike and they died out with a whimper.... obviously they decided to take a chance again......

Not the same guitar but I had a Line6 Variax 500 for a year or so, thought it would be a great guitar for recording. Think of it about 20 different guitars in one!
But the only sound that I liked to play with was the acoustic ones, all electrics sounded near the originals but the feeling of playing them was just awful. No dynamics (well, nearly..), I felt like any picking techniques sounded the same. I was just plain boring to use, for recording it was nice but you dont play your best if your guitar is playing against you.
I traded it for an SG Worn and Faded, I never regretted that.

Im sure that both Gibson and Fender has different approaches than Line6, but do you think these digital guitars will be sought after 20 years ahead?

That's the question really, eh? And I wonder if they will even be still operational?

I really dislike the Robot guitars. It seems like Gibson bought a huge amount of Tronical systems and had to find a way to dispose of them. If you don't disengage the machine head properly and try to tune it by hand.. you destroy it. Each one is ~$100 CAD to replace.

Those tuners are huge - as if an SG isn't headstock-heavy enough. Good call, Laurie, avoiding that. I know they're being reduced in price in Canada now. Look instead for any good-grained-and necked SG and put Burstbucker 1 & 2 in it. The specials have chunky necks. The 61s have the slimmest.

Anyway..
I'm not so sure about an all-digital guitar in this world where so many people are regressing to (or staunchly maintaining) a love of analogue.

Ohhh.... I didn't realise that! I'm a bit speechless.

This kind of sounds stupid but guitars like this with self-tuning and computer driven effects are almost the realm of a guitar beginner who may want a simple solution to a guitar and some effects. More experienced guitarists can tune very accurately themselves (some without a tuner I'm sure) and have their own collection of favourite effects (pedals, rack, etc).

The problem for Gibson is that this sort of gear is not priced like beginners and only real tech heads with money to burn would get a robot guitar instead of a good old LP or SG.

Good one Gibson for making the next guitar museum piece! Pity, I really like Gibsons!
