Not many posts or comments about the OS2.
What I have found is that many people like the fact it can make a DS1 kind of distortion. I like that too, but it sounds sooo compressed, not matter how you set the controls.
Similar for the Overdrive sound. I can get a TS-9 sound out of it, like that too, but still ,quite a lot of compression.
I am just wondering if there are any people who have gone through the trouble of trying quite a few of them to see if any of them do sound quite open. Open as a DS-1 can do.
On the compact homepage it says that the OS2 has not gone through any componentchanges, but still some may sound a bit different.
So has anyone done tests with quite a few? It may be similar as what I discovered last year about the BD2, that some do sound better than others.
Cheers for any comments!! |

I haven't done any comparisons since I just have the one I've had for about 10 years now. It's a reasonable "jack of all trades" pedal; does several things good, none of 'em great", if you know what I mean.
I've noticed that on both ends of the OD/DS extreme it does seem to naturally compress...maybe just the nature of the beast. I find the sound I like best in this pedal is when I set the Color knob at about 2 o'clock, giving me just a little more of a distortion edge over the overdrive(hopefully that makes sense).
It's a decent pedal. You can dial in some good tones on either end of the spectrum. I don't use mine much because it simply doesn't have enough bottom end for my tastes(I'm currently favoring a Keeley-modded BD-2). But I keep it around just in case. |

Hi Visserman
never played a OS-2 but i read on the Boss U.S. website a while back an interview with Joe Walsh and it was his overdrive of choice..in fact his board had 9 boss pedals on it.... and looking at the any stuff with him on it without the rest of the eagles..i.e claptons 'crossroads' festival, stratpack concert etc......you can see a couple of boss pedals,a yellow overdrive(OS-2) and a delay(DD-3)... i also thought his tone was a bit compressed sounding especially on the crossroads concert..... |

If you want more open sound try to change some of the diodes to LEDs. D3 and D7 for example should do the job.
You could also add a 3-way switch that selects either the DS1 or the SD1 section of OS-2 independently while in the middle position you still have the mixing.

Hey man - this sounds like a job for chrissy 'anorak' damage:
Done a test with four of them seen in the photo - http://s616.photobucket.com/albums/tt247/ChrissyDamage/?action=view¤t=os-2x4.jpg&newest=1
3 of them sound the same, the one on the right sounds noticeably angrier, brighter and better (if this is what you mean by open)
Opened them up and had a look, the 'good' one has an JRC 1458 opamp, the others have NEC 1458 opamps - so I guess they have undergone componant changes!!
the 3 similar ones are from 2003-2007,
the angry one has no serial number and no rear label (doh!) but the instructions were printed in 1995 in taiwan, so must be around this era. To tell them apart the box is almost orange compared to the others which are yellow, the dials are (very) slightly darker and turn much more freely than the newer ones, which feel quite stiff in comparison.
Hope this helps!!

AAAAA, theres another one i need to add to my top 5 list...
what a great little, under rated pedal that OS2 The distortion is Pro Cat by design, with it's own tone filter before the mix and the o/d is SD1 in style, but more bass and gain |

chrissydamage, I have to ask, where did you get that pedalboard? That's very much the size I need for four pedals. I had a friend rig me up a board last year, but it was bigger than I wanted. Your board looks like just the size I need.

Hey silvertone,
Thats actually a chrissydamage own brand lol
(its really just a crappy stagg case with a sheet of plastazote foam in the lid - I traced round the foam on a BCB-60 for the exact Boss shape and just chopped it with a hot knife and a steel ruler - putting a bit more space between the pedals so you can use normal patch leads too)
Only discovered the hot-knife technique about halfway through construction hence the irregularity ;)
Does the job though, and can be made including buying the case for about 20-25; put some egg box foam in the base part as well and you have a perfectly functional case and board to take on the road :)
ps thanks for pasting the image - still haven't got the hang of how to do that!!

chrissy,
Thanks for comparing some OS2,s
I will just work with the one I have here, but will keep in mind about those different versions of the pedal.
ChristoMep.: Hmm Pro co Rat is of higher quality than then OS2, and does not have the midrange hump of the OS2 as well. Overall a much better pedal, but I prefer the size of the Boss ones for now--Space and Time---
Okay guys thanks for the imput . |
