What's your favorite pickup position or combonation. For example; I prefer just a neck humbucker. But very rarely I use a neck humbucker with a single coil in the bridge as a brighter combonation.
If you want to get more specific about certaint brands or wiring, please do. |

I love the clean out of phase sound on strats - mostly the neck and middle. Funk, Blues, Country lives very nicely in that selection.
Also I'll ask, sorta within topic, if anyone has a brand/model of p90 replacements that they like.....

I love the single coil sound and the neck pup on my Strat especially. The middle's nice too and, while I find the bridge postion a little too trebly/edgy on any guitar I'd say I'm the happiest with the Strat there, also, but would still like to make an improvement... |

With Les Paul I prefer bridge position (n. 1); with Strato I prefer the mid/neck position (n. 4) and the bridge position (n. 1) for the heavy tracks when I have just one guitar and don't bring L.P.; with Jem I've must choose only bridge or neck 'cause the single drastically raised low it's volume from some months ago! Maybe a fake contact... dunno, I shall to bring it to an electronical expert, cause you know that what it's clear for you, it's a cybernetic jam for me! |

I prefer the bridge humbucker on my LP guitar for rhythm and leads and the neck pickup for cleans and leads with the tone rolled back ala Claptons "Woman Tone", Slash does this a lot too. The middle position is also great for a nice hollow Metallica style clean sound. My guitar has a series/parallel switch on the bridge humbucker which is great for stratlike sounds but without the buzz. |

| Bridge humbucker by itself, unless I am playing one of my Teles, then it has to be Neck humbucker and bridge single coil on at the same time. |

| i use both humbuckers for rhythm and use the bridge bucker for edgy leads and the neck for thick sustain. i use a modified yamaha rgz 611. this is what i think gets what i really want: a les paul type sound in a strat-shaped guitar. |

Hi Guys
This might be an oversimplification, but all pickup positions are useful, whether it's on my single or Humbucker equipped guitars.
I listen to the song/track & find a suitable position.
Sometimes the out of phase positions are special, but as I said, it just depends on the song & the context you are trying to fit it into.

On my single coil Strat I use the neck for really clean stuff, neck and middle if I want some more warmth, Centre not much although it sounds good, Middle and Bridge for the blues, Bridge for distortion and solo work. On my bucker equipped guitars the neck for clean and the bridge for spank and distortion. Dont use the middle position much. |

I own a fender fat stratocaster MIM. For rock tone I really like the sound of the alnico TEX MEX humbucker, for almost everything.
For other clean I like the tone of the single coil in the middle position. For blues I go for the neck.
Hey does anyone know about any good inexpensive alnico V single coil pickups for upgrading?
Thanks, Max |

i'm with the Doc on this..really whatever the mood i'm in will determine the pickup selection...a little trick i use sometimes in a solo is if your hammering a note with your left hand on the neck, grab the pickup selector on a strat a push and pull it rapidly between the different positions and you can get a sort of wah effect you can also use the front tone control to increase the effect by setting it to taste on the front pickups.... i got this one off jeff beck... ...... |

I'm glad to hear how so many other people use the neck pickup. When I created this thread it was because I was frustrated with everybody always saying "you have the pickup switch in the wrong spot". I don't know anybody who uses the neck pickup, I think it sounds the best.
Dr. Bob you are right that they can all be useful. I guess I just wanted to know I wasn't crazy and that the neck pickup is normal for people to use.
Thank You Everybody! |

Hi DarrinPA
Learn to use the Pause-Freeze Frame on video clips. when you see the pickup selector switch.
I think you will be presently surprised at your findings.
Like with your girlfriend/s, the neck position, is used more than you think.

The bridge is for treble and the neck is for rhythm, it even says so by the switch on some of the better guitars |
