Is this a Ted Newman-Jones ? I can find no definitive reference.
I know Keith had several Newman-Jones, the ones that became the Chandler Austin Special in particular.
The photo is by Robert Knight, c1973.

is it just me, or is that a 5-string guitar?
I know Keef has (had) a few Teles with 5 strings (he removed the low E string, for some open tuning), so a custom 5-string isn't that surprising...but it is unusual. |

It is a 5 string. Ted Newman-Jones built Keef several 5 strings in 1978 or 1979.
This is an oddone because it predates the Newman-Jones by 5 or 6 years.
I have two other shots of Keith in action with this model but I have yet to find out who made the dang thing.

possibly it's an early Zemaitis,as i think a lot of the 60's crowd...(stones,harrision,faces,) were starting to use some of his guitars around then,i'm fairly sure the great keef had a couple but i always thought they were the metal fronted 'Les Paul' types..Harrison and ronnie wood (who was in the faces then)were probably the most high profile users, but even clapton had one of his acoustics,on the 'Concert for George' georges son dhani uses his dads zemaitis acoustic for most of the gig.......... |

I'm pretty hip to the Zemaitis angle. Woody and Ronnie Lane both were playing "Z's" as early as 1971 in The Faces. Also, this is really altogether different from Tony's guitars at this point. His metal fronts were begining to come on. Woody turned Keith onto " Z's" and Tony made him a 5 string narrow waist "LP" with the skull, pistol and sabre inlays in '74 or'75.
This has perplexed me for a while. |
