Both DM-2 and DM-2 has been discussed a lot on this forum but as I dont have DM-3 for myself Im a little bit curious of the differences between them. I suppose the delaytime is about the same, but how does they sound compared to each other, and witch sounds the best? I have a slight feeling that DM-2 is more sought after, why? Do they have the same BBD (I know there was at least two different in DM-2)? Price-wise are they about the same? Which one is the rarest? A lot of questions all trying, sort of, to answer the question Do I need both (a question my wife certainly would ask) ?

I have DM-3 myself, but dont have DM-2 (yet ) to compare with. From what Ive heard DM-2 is slightly fuzzier sounding, and a bit darker sounding than DM-3. DM-3 is equipped with a noise reduction cirquit. Other then that they should sound very much alike and the delaytimes are equal.
From what Ive seen on Ebay the prices are about the same, but recently a mint condition boxed DM-3 was sold for close to 200 british pounds if I dont remember wrongly.
I see the DM-2 show up every now and then in Sweden, but the only DM-3 I have seen on the swedish market, I bought.

Youre right there Sunburst, Ive only seen one DM-3 for sale in Sweden the last year or so and at least a dozen DM-2. Could it be so that most bought DD-2 instead of DM-3, as I think they came out at about the same time. Who wanted a 300 ms murky delay when you could get 800 ms clear as glass But I suppose that DD-2 was much costier at the time.

| Goran, Im sure the DD-2 was very popular as you say when it came out, boasting much longer delaytimes and clearer sound. I guess the analog delays have became more popular in recent years, when musicians seek the warmer less sterile sound of a digital unit. I have long been using digital delays myself, and only recently discovered the sweet sound of analog delays. |

The introduction of digital delays was a big thing in the 80s. I remember doing an A/B test in my band using a DM-2 against an Ibanez Digital Delay. We ran vocals through it and listened to how the DM-2 distorted the "hello" sound while the digital counterpart kept saying "hello". Then we laughed at the poor quality of the DM-2.
At the time it didn't occur to any of us that maybe it's a good thing that the echo isn't perfect after 2 repeats. |

| I've had my DM-3 for 20 years. Probably be able to give it to my 3-year-old when she's ready to play. While I have occasionally thought about getting a digital one, I've never really needed another delay. It just has this warmth that is hard to describe, like how the perfect neck feels in your hand - entirely personal, yet an experience we can all relate to. Find one if you can. |

Amen to that. I fell in love with my DM-3 as soon as I bought it. As you say, its hard to describe in words how good it sounds.
