Seriuosly, I've heard they ran higher plate voltage on these models to try and be louder(The Bloody Who!), they ended up losing some of that crystaline headroom. An easy check is to run a variac at appox. 95 to 100VAC. Randall Smith adds this feature to alot of his Mesa amps.
...ahh the beloved Variac ...funny not many cats know about them or what they do...but it's one of the little things in life I couldn't live without... |

Personally, where Fenders are concerned I'm more partial to the Super Reverb or the Deluxe Reverb, but different strokes I guess...The Twin is just too overpowered for what I do, whereas with the Super you're talking 40-45 watts(which is still more than I need). With a Deluxe you have 22 watts or so, enough power for any club I've ever worked(especially if you have a good sound man). But a good Super Reverb with a good reverb and tremolo circuit(I've heard some where the trem sucked)...that's hard to beat! |

Yes, a variac is a tool all workbenches should have. It's a good way to bring any unknown piece of electrical equipment to life slowly. I use mine on all my older gear, including tube amps and radios. |
