I'm starting to play with some friends in a three-piece, and they needed a bass player. I'm a guitar player and have very little bass experience.
Does anyone have suggestions on material to study, play around with, or whatever? Any information, links, or opinions would be appreciated.
(Also, what are your favorite boss bass pedals? Thanks!)

As usual... just learn the various scales and you'll be fine.

Melody work on the bass can sound very good.

I started as a guitar player. In my case, I hacked away at it for years and was "OK" but no better than that (I think because I have big hands). I too ended up in a band that needed a bass player. Never looked back. Every band I've played with since has been on bass (I think it works better because I have big hands).

To learn the bass, all I did was learn a couple of song sets.

I've never used any bass pedals. The Eden head I use has a compressor and parametric EQ built in. If it didn't have those, I'd probably use a LMB-3 and a GEB-7 (or more likely a modded CS-3 and a PQ3B).

Yeah, that is true. I've got a tune I'm working on just now based on two chords in the key of E. I'm going to try getting the bass line to follow the vocal melody.
But for starting out, I'd recommend sticking to being part of the percussion, and really locking in with the beat and the groove.

Laurie - I also ended up playing bass in one band. In my case it was with a group of good friends, and the two guitarists could play way better than me. The way we worked together allowed us to put up with my very average bass playing. You can hear some of the old stuff here, and judge my bass skills for yourself if you're interested...

I too switched to the bass for a band that needed a bassplayer, but the guitar has remained my main instrument. I also have a band where I'm the lead guitarist, but the band I play bass in is my main band.
As for the boss bass pedals, I only got a ME-50B which is a pedal with amazing effects and sound quality for it's price.

This is why I bring my questions to you, my friends. As always, great information. I'll be using some of this stuff this weekend!

A legend among bass players.
His playing is actually simple... but very effective.

IMHO, you just need to stay close enough to hear/see the drummer at practice, so you can lock into his/her parts. once you and the drummer can function as a unit, then you can branch out and try to insert some fills every now and then. I guess you can practice playing along with a click track, but it's not the same.

my favorite Boss bass pedal is the CE-2B, with the LM-2 not far behind. I really wanted to like the ODB-3, but it sounds like a can of bees, so I switched to a SansAmp Bass Driver.

Also, Billy Sheehan mostly recognized as a shredder on the bass made a very good entry level instructional DVD called Basic Bass.

He talks about right- and lefthand technique, keeping time, playing with a drummer, choosing a bass, setting up your amp, etc.
I can highly recommend it.

There's a little piece of it here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlM0DO8pmdI

My favourite pedals for bass are the CS-3 and the CE-2b.
Next up would be the awesome PH-1r.
I didn't really like the ODB-3 either, I had a custom bass overdrive build based on a tubescreamer.
I also used an LMB-3 in the past which is decent.

I'm currently dabbling with the HF2, instead of the CE2B, on my wife's bass.
