well,
my peavey ultra 112 combo arrived today...
was the worst packing job i've ever seen. basically they wrapped a larger box around it and taped it together. they didn't disconnect the footswitch so that was sticking out the back and there was no padding between the amp and the cardboard. the back panel got its screws pulled out somehow. tubes were almost out of the sockets.
needless to say i could overlook that if it worked correctly.
clean channel works great. plenty loud, decently warm.
crunch and ultra channels are outputting barely.
to get an audible sound really the master vol on the amp needs to be at like 10 with the channel volume at 10 as well... which should be VERY loud, but alas it's at a volume that you can speak over.
would anyone say this is a symptom of anything easy? e.g. jiggle this wire, make sure A is plugged into B etc.?
currently very frustrated heh. |

bleh, just checked out the preamp tubes.
while they're a bit mix & matched but should all be 12ax7's.
the power tubes seem to be okay.
guessing it's gotta be something else. |

They have a DIN connector on the footswitch, I believe. I had a problem in the DIN plug on my old Renown 212. Does it work without the footswitch? Peavey are good about parts for older amps. Here's a link: http://www.peavey.com/support/ |

works equally poorly with or without the footswitch.
i was rather po'd when i saw they left the footswitch plugged in and just crammed a box around it so that the footswitch plug was "weight bearing" if the box was set with the amp on its back. |

thanks heh.
Dr. Bob, do you have any input on the amp symptoms?
trying to figure out if it's easily repairable or if i should just go through the hassle of returning it. |

well, called the eeeebil empire chain store that i bought it from (aka guitar center) and they told me they will fix it for free and i can return it to any local store to have that done.
i was askin about making an insurance claim on the package but told the guy that they might wanna pack stuff better. |

Hi zentropa
I'm glad it's all working out for you. See if the store will tell you what they find with it?
Regards Dr. Bob

it's not going to be so simple.
have come to the conclusion that one of the following is true: 1. the amp didn't work correctly when they shipped it out. 2. the amp worked and was damaged in shipping.
tried returning it to the local store. they won't refund the shipping cost. the store that shipped it won't fill a UPS insurance claim. the claim wouldn't pass anyways since they would come investigate the box and find it was just packed super poorly.
basically, they're trying to hit me w/ the $35 freight charge, which is more than 10% of the amp's cost to me.
tomorrow i have to call the store manager at the store i bought it from and work some big gigantic PITA thing out to get all of my money back or work to negotiate some kind of shipping insurance claim to get money to fix the thing.
it all boils down to the fact that due to the corporate nature of the situation and manager loss prevention policies/bonuses, the local stores refuse to take the loss on the item and want the store that shipped it out to take the loss.
i hate corporate bs. |
