I just picked up another HM-2
See the New pedals thread.

This might count as a sort of double post, but it also goes to show
that I was very happy with the deal.

Dr. Bob,

The HM-2 is such an 80's relic. Not even in vintage terroritory. What gives?

Hi bosshog

There are others on this Forum, that will beg to differ.
This pedal sounds awesome when connected to a vintage Fender Valve amp, with the drive down low.

If you look around the forum, you may stumble across the SECRET Dual pedal setups, that some of us use .. The HM-2 is amongst the pedals in some of these Dual Pedal Setups.

Besides, I'm old school, for me it's about tone.
I Don't play Metal.

I can hear you cringing bosshog, but for some of us, the HM-2 is a sleeper pedal.

It also lends itself to a bunch of easy mods, to the clipping section.

Regards Dr. Bob

Sorry for the "so near yet so far" pics, if I spot bigger versions I'll post them.
There is a Japanese site somewhere that has a lot of old ads, Boss I'm not sure about, will look out for it again.

I found a tab book of mine which has some HM-2/BF-2 combo settings that I noted down many years ago.
Unfortunately I don't have the pedals to check if the settings still sound good to my older ears. I probably will look to replace the pedals again, now I've resparked my interest.
I always enjoyed trying endless combinations to approximate the tones I was after with the minimal gear I had - I don't understand some people flipping pedals so quickly these days, it's missing a lot of the fun in my opinion.
"I need to sound like Jeff Beck by 3-45PM today!"

I have a HM-2 and I remember that when I got it, I tested it and thought: Yuck! By far the worst Boss distortion I had heard up to then. Maybe I used the wrong amp (must have been a Fender Princeton Chorus, which doesn't take distortion well!). So back it went into the shelf and was never taken out again. And maybe I should follow your advice and connect it to my Fender Twin Reverb or Champ 12.

Hi Sletman & Guys
The HM-2's and HM-3's Love humbuckers, especially P90's,
Even the new modern & hotter pickups.

The HM-2 is a bit weak with single coils on a Strat or Tele.

They were designed to work with high output pickups.
maybe this is why, some people here hate the HM-2 & HM-3.

Hi Dr. Bob,
nice hint with the 'buckers, as I mainly play Strats and a Tele. So I'll try it with a guitar equipped with seimour Duncan Hot P90's and with some humbucker equipped guitars through my Fenders.
Really thanks for the input. I'm trying to learn something each day ;-)

Hi Sletman
I get a nice warm Marshall type of sound from my HM-2 and a more extreme very loud, Marshall sound from the HM-3

Good Luck with your tests.
In case you were wondering, my Fender is a Black face Fender-75 1x12 combo, it's very much like a Twin, without the extra speaker.
It was only made for a very short time,
it was designed by Paul Revera, of Revera Amps, for Fender.
And it's VERY LOUD.

I just got a Black Strat, I will tell you what it sounds like into the HM-2 & HM-3, I will see if I get a weak & bad sounding overdrive.
But, It will have to wait until the easter weekend, so I can crank it up a bit.

BTW, Stratosphere convinced me to get an SD-2, & it sounds fantastic into the Fender as well.

What Overdrives-Distortions are you currently using Sletman?

Regards Dr. Bob

Hi Dr.Bob,
at the moment, I don't play my fender twin reverb which is waiting to be retubed. My momentary amp is a Peavey Bravo 112, a wonderful amp which sounds very good once you've gotten rid of the crappy stock speaker. There's a Vintage30 in mine now. Sometimes I just use the amp's distortion. But normally my Hughes&Kettner Tubeman+ is my main source for OD/Dist. It's a 3 channel tube preamp, which sounds very nice and you've got 3 sounds at your feet, plus bypass. Lately I#ve been experimenting with the Digitech Pedals. The Bad Monkey is impressing, but the Hot Head's a little weak. So BM is a goog way to get more sounds out of my amp and it's a nice and simple soluttion (which the H&K is NOT!)
Sorry to say but I've never really used Boss for OD/Dist, did never sound great to me, but that may be because I grew up with a TS-808 which seems to have formed some hearing/listening habits.

Well, today I dug out my near mint HM-2, plugged it into my Fender Champ 12 and my ESP Hybrid (hi-out Humbucker in there), and... yuck! No matter how much I fiddle around with the knobs, there always seem to be some very nasty frequencies in the sound. I compared HM-3 and MZ-2 to it in the same configuration and the HM-3 sounded way better. The MZ was very weak sounding compared to it.
So I'll let the HM-2 continue its long sleep.

Happy Easter all you Bossheads ;-)

The HM-2 was really the first distortion pedal specifically for metal. It is kind of vintage in that respect. Boss did make millions of them though so I do not think it will ever be a highly valuable pedal.
