Hi Dr Bob and all

the album i was refering too was the 'Live in Europe' album recorded in '73 the year before the irish tour and regarded as a bit of a classic over here...it was one of my first guitar albums ever... what a way to start listening to music and especially the blues..i also have a soft spot for his first solo album after his band 'Taste' broke up it's just called 'Rory Gallagher'..... from around '71......

P.S. the Bare Knuckle pickup company market a set of pickups for the stratocaster called the...." Irish tour '74 "...

All kidding aside, I picked up a 50's "relic roadworn" series Strat the other day in the local guitar shop, as well as a few other American, Mexican and Chinese Strats. I must say, It played very nicely!

It really did feel vastly superior to the other Strats. Then again, it had a $2900 + price tag

So I'll stick with relicing my Indo elCheapo's for now!!

Hi Franzoni - I might well get over to Dublin at some point this year - if I do, I'll definitely look that 'Rory Gallagher corner' up - thanks for the tip. You have the original 'live in europe' on vinyl too - very, very nice - probably the best he did

Dr.Bob - my recommendation (and, honestly, I just missed getting this post up before Franzoni - we obviously think alike!) - his self-titled album 'Rory Gallagher' (1971) - I think it shows all the different sides of Rory. My choice tracks would be 'Can't Believe It's True' (brilliant for jamming to - A dorian mode works a treat) and 'I Fall Apart'. I think I've got all of his albums and a couple of (very) rough bootlegs too and I always come back to this album at some point.

Disco Stu - sorry for hi-jacking the thread!

Would you not go for redundants rec and just put a can of lighter fuel over it.......... i was tempted to do this to my Squier tele after an article in the 'Guitarist' mag last year where they gave five of the staff a yamaha pacifica to mod/relic... the editor stripped his and put the body on the Bar BQ and set it on fire.....looked pretty cool to me....if i have one gripe with modern Fenders is the amount of paint on them.....

Thread Hijacks are welcome and encouraged! Especially for a good cause like Rory Gallagher.

Anyway, I might avoid the barbeque or lighter fluid effect unless all the plastic bits were off the body. That burnt plastic odor has a way of lingering...

If you really want the paintless and burnt look, use Citistrip to get the paint off and a simple propane plumbers'torch!

So here's a closeup of the G&L headstock for Pawnshop Trash:
