Hi folks Just like hateandwar, I'm considering buying a Gretsch Electromatic model. Two models that shine out to me are the 5120 (Gretschbuckers) and the 5129 (DeArmond's). What I wanna know before tryout and decision, is how different those two pickups sound. Anyone has a guitar with such pickups? Thanks in advance Joske
The difference is as simple as single-coil vs. humbucker.
I don't own any Gretschbucker-equipped guitars but I have several Dynasonic-equipped guitars(Dynasonic is the current term of DeArmond pickups). To my ears these pickups are simply brighter and clearer than your average humbucker, with better string-to-string separation when playing overdriven. BTW...the 5120s are still in production but all of the Dynasonic-equipped hollowbody Electromatics(5125, 5126, 5127, 5128, and 5129...all the same guitars in different color schemes) have been officially discontinued.
Thanks Witloofboer I usually buy my gear at Key Music in Sint-Niklaas, but I can't seem to find the guitars on there website (that website always seems to work against me).
The humbuckers on Gretsch is nothing like for example Gibson humbuckers, they are more twangy and lacks the muddiness of most traditional humbuckers. I would say that the Gretsch humbuckers is fine with people who like Fender sinle coils.
