Thank you Doctors. I'll take 2 great reviews over 2 dozen mediocre ones any day.
I'll try to keep this short. As both the producer and performer of this "album," being complimented on the sound is maybe even more important to me than being complimented on the songs.
The Sound: a combination of acquired best practices (8+ years of home recording - & yes, all of this was recorded at home in what I like to call The Musick Room), continued experimentation, & dumb luck. Minimum (if any) use of effects when recording - even reverb muddies up the sound, which explains why my Alesis Microverb has been unplugged for months.
The guitar sounds fall into two categories - the older songs recorded with a Digitech Genesis (which I still use for vocals) and the newer songs with a Sansamp PSA-1. All bass recorded with the PSA-1 using a 68 Mustang Bass with the Ampeg SVT preset. The dirt is a combination of settings, guitars, and aggressive playing style. For example, both Radio and Dead Thing are recorded with the PSA-1 Marshall JMP�1 preset, but Radio is with my Telecaster, while Dead Thing is with my Les Paul Studio. Dr. Bob: The end guitar on DT is my 66 Mustang (neck: Seymour Duncan Hotrails, bridge: Dimarzio Fast Track) using the Big Muff Pi setting (tweaked drive).
Other Stuff:
Acid 5.0 for drum sample sequencing and editing
An ancient version of Cool Edit Pro for recording & mixing
T-racks 2.0 for mastering
M-Audio Fast Track interface
Alesis RA-100 monitor amp & Monitor One speakers (old & discontinued)
Creative MuVo mp3 player - you know how Motown used to keep car speakers in their studio for playback because that was how many people would listen to music? Well, the earbuds of mp3 players are the new car speakers.

No probs Tim and thanks for the info on the recording approach. I've got a bunch of Tech 21 pedals but not the PSA-1, although I've often fancied one - I've got a space in a rack just waiting for it! You've created some excellent full & phat guitar sounds just right for the style of music and also managed to get clear and sweet tones for those quieter moments. Nice...
The lack of reverb does make it really punchy and brings out your tight and precise playing (it's got to be spot-on when there's no long reverbs to cover it up and you've absolutely nailed it).
I also thought that your songs are really well crafted with hints of all sorts of influences. Think I'm a UK fan of 'The Blairs' Tim - was the name inspired by our (ex) Prime Minister of the same name???!!!  |

Just so you know....
I'm uploading the tracks to my "Blairs" folder on my iPod.
I can play them louder & more often that way.
Thanks for all the info about your recording techniques.
I really should use my SansAmp GT-2 more often.
I connect it to a BehringClone GI-100 guitar (DI box) direct box (red one),with the 4x12 speaker emulation turned on.
And then add small amounts of other effects like spring reverb or a tiny bit of delay from a DD-2.
these are dam good for the money & the 4x12 emulation is good.
I now typically keep it all in one of my gig bags, as my backup rig.
and in case I get asked to play a cameo, with a few old friends & their bands.
It's a fantastic, as well as not to expensive alternative to lugging a ute/van/wagon full of tube gear.
I have used it in thu-mode of the Fender tube combo,
but it scares me  out of me, connecting to the speaker terminals in the tru-mode, and with the 20db Pad/s on.

I finally got a chance to listen to it.. been sitting on my desktop ever since the 10th.
Anyway, punkish isn't my thing really but I found the production very well done.
I enjoyed the album in spite of the genre! It could almost "turn" me. hehe
Kudos to the group for well rehearsed, tracked, & mixed songs.
Thanks especially to redundant for sharing his great music!
Its always welcome to hear your guys' bands.
I think I'll actually be pulling it into my player more than originally thought! |
