yep, I need to look into an ESR meter as well. thanks to Dr. Bob and Laurie for their informed rants, and to zentropa for getting the ball rolling last year!

here's a stupid question: do you need to disconnect one/both legs of an electrolytic cap to measure it with an ESR meter? and how can one tell what the original ESR rating of a cap was/is?

the intel 810 and 815 chipset motherboards for PC's had a huge failure rate due to those caps.
