Do you remember this auction for a painted MIJ BF-2 ?

http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7418513021

Well I won the auction and the pedal arrived home today.

I was hoping the paint could go, leaving the purple color that was hidden behind. But unfortunately, the former purple paint was not here anymore, just at some point, to prove the boxe was originaly purple.

As this white paint was awfull and awfully made (not regular at all), I removed it all. So I got a naked aluminium boxed BF-2.

Besides this strange painting, you can note the screw is not original. In fact I was hoping it's a silver one, and it is, but not a Boss one. It's just a replacement screw, it's too tiny to be a Boss one. Correct me if I'm wrong, but silver screw are about the size of black ones, rigth ? This one is at least 2 times tinier.

But, there comes the other facts. The pedal is black label, MIJ. And it's a "Use a coin" label. The boxe is old, it's the boxe with 2 holes in the batterie compartiment. So how could it NOT be a silver screw one ?

Unfortunately, no serial to date it. No sticker, no printed 4 numbers. Do you think I could date it using the printing on the PCB ?

I'll take some pictures.

I think I placed a bid on this one about 6 months ago. It was sold as a broken pedal then. If it's the same BF-2 you might find some frsh soldering inside as well.

The silver screw is a bit smaller than the black screws but from the picture it looks like an unoriginal screw. We know that Boss used the "coin" back plates for quite a while after introducing the black screw. I'm not sure how long they kept the 2 hole battery compartment. My 0300 (Feb 81) SG-1 have them while my 124000 (Nov 81)OD-1 doesn't. My 082900 (Jul 81) PH-1R has the single oval hole.

I don't think you'll have any luck dating from the numbers on the PCB but the transistor codes might help. There's usually a code consisting of a number and a letter on every transistor. These denote year and month. 4D would mean April 74, 84, 94 or 04 so you have to know which decade it's from.

Some solders were resoldered, but that does not seem to be recent. The batterie snap was disconnected, this could have been the problem.

Here is the screw (it's in fact obvious it's not a Boss one) :

I can't see so far some interesting date code. I'll see this later.

Pics are coming...

Hop, here they are.

http://perso.orange.fr/jumping-jack/matos/effets/bf2/bf2.html

I put a regular screw that I got from a dead DD-3.

Some other interesting points concerning the box :
*the led is glued into the box, not settled with a screw. On the pic you don't see the original led, I broke it by accident when I removed the PCB. Damn moron I am... Luckily changing a led is easy for me.
*There is a strange screw place just in the midle of the box. Like if we could settle the PCB using it (but Boss PCBs aren't settled this way).

By the way, it sounds wonderful....

I've seen that fake screw socket before. I think you mean the thingy partially obscured by a green wire in the third to last picture. Don't know what it's for but I don't think it was ever planned to hold a screw.

The glued in LED looks unoriginal. I'm not quite sure how it is normally secured in place. Later versions used a tiny PCB screwd in place but it's not there on this version.

There might also be date codes on the integrated circuits and these might be easier to spot. Was the original insulation sheet present under the back plate? It used to be cardboard but was replaced with a yellow plastic sheet around the time the black screw was introduced.

Yes. I was missing some words to express it correctly I thing...

The led is totally non original, I secured it in there using what I could find : a little rubber led holder and some glue. The former one was glued.

Under the back plate there is a transparent (white) plastic insulation sheet. I would say it's unoriginal too, as I never saw one like this in all my Boss pedals for now. But well...

I'll try to find a date code when I have some time.
