just picked up a ~86 kramer focus 7000 on craigslist the other day for $120. made in japan by ESP, solid instrument. pickups are kind of lacking but i've realized that no one is really making the style of bridge pickup in there.
the pickup in the bridge position is a dual-jazz bass styled humbucker with the screws set similar to standard J pickups but 2 of them flush together.
i've only found a handful of replacement pickups. 2 were $20 made in china junkers that will likely sound worse than the gotoh pickups already in there. the other would be to swap over to the american deluxe p-bass setup which would likely cost more than the bass i purchased.
the pickup style is like the bridge pickup here:
i was wondering if anyone knew of any other aftermarket options on this.
I had this same problem, I was going to mod a normal p-bass with that type of pickup. I'm a huge fan of the sound that the Fender gets and wanted that same pickup combonation. Unfotunatly I could only find really cheap ones or really expensive, good luck trying. I'm just going to settle with a cheap brand.
thanks for the input. posted this question on a couple of boards and you are the first person to write anything hehe.
do you recall offhand the super expensive option?
i figure the bass i picked up might be worth an upgrade in the long run.
funny w/ the ESP made kramers. if they had ESP on the headstock they'd be $500+ for basses and like $800+ for guitars.
if they were USA kramers they'd be $500+ for basses and guitars. later USA kramers had bodies & necks manufactured by ESP but were assembled in the USA. i guess i can't complain though, lots of quality for not a lot of money and that's right up my alley.
If I remember correctly, the expensive one was pulled out of a real Fender American made bass and was being sold on ebay. I thought there was also some on Warmoth.com but I can't find any now.
All that I've found are the chep ones again. But would it be the same size if you put two J pickups together, cutting away the screw holder part for ech side that's touching?
Maybe an email to Fender would be a good idea, they may sell them to you if you need to replace the ones you have.
