for financial reasons i had to sell my musicman stingray... after 2 months of craigslist ads i finally sold it this week.
i want to own a bass, but it doesn't need to be anything special.
good enough to have me want to pick it up and play it every so often, but i don't plan to gig on it, record on it, etc. however, i gave myself a strict budget of $250 or less (including shipping) for this replacement bass.
i noticed i can grab a peavey patriot bass for like $180 w/ HSC and i was curious if anyone knew anything about these or peavey guitars/basses in general (particularly ones from 1980-1994) as i realize i know nothing about their line except for the wolfgang and i once bought a raptor as a birthday present for someone for $50.
i know they made their instruments in the USA (albeit many of them with plywood) until much later than other manufacturers... was looking for any input or opinions.

the other options i'm considering are an ibanez sr400/500/600/800/etc. or a mexico fender jazz or p-bass...

hehe, i posted this on 3 forums last night and got 0 replies. i guess it's hard to find peavey fans or at least anyone willing to write about em.
i got a usa made peavey fury bass today for $135 w/ a sweet gig bag.
p-bass body/pickup, jazz styled neck w/ maple fretboard. it's got some dings but the neck, frets, nut, electronics, etc. are all solid. was a nice surprise. |

I'm sorry you had to sell yr Stingray, but the Fury should serve you well. I used to have one, and it was quite playable (the J-bass neck). a few years ago I sold it to get a MIM Fender with P/J pickups, but lately I don't play as much bass anymore....

getting a bass is on my hitlist as well..i really want it for putting down basslines to my own stuff at home..we don't see much of the peavey guitars here, mostly the amps...it's not a priority as i could borrow one from our bass player or he would probably even come over and put the bass down for me if i wanted but like zentropa i would like to have one to mess around with now and again.....i will most likely hold off until i see an old squier or similar..i.e old tokai,ibanez..... etc for a good price....our singer pulled a precision copy out of a skip a while back..it needs some TLC and some strings...all it's doing at the moment is propping up a corner in his sitting room...... ........ |

i honestly hadn't played my stingray in 4 years or so... so it wasn't a great loss to me. it was a badazz finish called "burnt apple" though which was black/purple/red sunburst. part of it was that playing bass was impossible until the nerve endings healed up in my finger that i cut.
i never liked the sound or playability of it but back when i was auditioning for bands most bands required you to play certain models of instruments and my ibanez wasn't gonna hack it.
while i wanted to get another MIJ ibanez SR, honestly i didn't really care to pay $300 for one of those when i'll probably touch it once a month for about 10 minutes.
everything is fully functional on this fury but the frets are bursting out a little bit at the edges... and i figure @$135 i'll practice filing em down (i usually pay to have this done) and not really care if i f anything up. |

thats it bro... can't really go wrong for $135..it's funny that you say you didn't like the stringray..i was never mad about the sound out of them either..our original bass player had two..a 4 and a 5 string, our last bass player had one as well and our current bass player has one and a fender P bass as well......any time we have recorded it's been very hard to get a good sound out of them,i've also played with other bands as a stand in guitarist and the bass player had the 5 string version,i thought there was no defintion on the notes and it was very boomy sounding...i like the sound the bass player in my own band gets with the fender P bass....good bottom end but you can still hear the note and his runs up and down the neck..... |

oddly, roadstar basses are fairly expensive in town here... $350-500 for nice condition ones, $200-250 if it's a beater and needs tons of work.
a friend of mine just got one for $200 and spent 13 hours restoring it.
Franzoni:
yah, i got one because i wasn't able to track down an early 90's american p-bass plus (the one w/ a pickguard) and had always liked how they looked. nowadays it seems everyone and their brother has a stingray (back when i got mine they were harder to come by).
i'm not a fan of humbucker bass pickups. i used to like a lot of midrange in my bass tone and i would kill the entire preamp boosting mids to the point where i wasn't able to shape my tone.
i personally prefer P/J setups or 2xJ setups as i like the brightness and articulation. ended up going with the fury because i figured it was the best bass i was going to find for under $150 and didn't require hours and hours of labor restoring it.
debating dropping an EMG select in there but not sure if i really care that much hehe. |

| I use a Peavey Milestone II and I really like, as do most people who play it also. It has the right amount of mids that I like and it's simple enough with 1 volume/ 1 tone knob configuration. I think it beats any squier P-bass. |
