I had a search and couldn't find anything about Roger Mayer pedals, so I thought I would start a thread.
If you don't know (and if you don't, shame on you!) roger mayer famously started out making fuzz pedals for Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck before going on to invent the octavia specifically for Hendrix, and spent a lot of studio time with him.
I recently bought a voodoo axe pedal and I have to say it is the nicest piece of kit I've ever bought. http://www.roger-mayer.co.uk/voodoo_axe.htm
It's a really rich thick fuzz, sort of designed for down tuned guitars but I find it just as good in standard tuning (although I expect the fact that my PRS is strung with some super heavy strings probably doesn't hurt!). There is something about it, I bought it not knowing whether it will be a novelty effect or something I would use, and well, it's the most fun I've had with my guitar for a long time (as one of the reviewers noted, now that I'm actually reading them on the Mayer website). It handles chords really sweetly, and if you are pushing it and you strike a chord hard, you get a lovely compressed dip at the start. It's definitely more of a fuzz effect than a distortion, I've found speedy alternate picking didn't sound brilliant, but bluesy pentatonic soloing was absolutely blissful. The construction is rock solid and the battery is essentially held outside the enclosure behind a little sliding panel on the front, but I do have one annoying problem with it. My power supply is a carl martin Big John, and all the powerjacks are angled. Unfortunately the socket on the back of this is recessed just enough to not reach. I mean, I have straight boss daisy chains, but I'd rather keep things neat. As for the outputs, they are also a bit fiddly to get to with angled patch leads, but not impossible, unless you want to run to two amps thanks to the twin buffered outputs (fantastic!) and the hardwired out (also very nice). So, if you have 125+ to spare (or 50 if you get incredibly lucky on ebay like me ) then I think you should all go out and buy one of these right away. Does anyone else recommend any roger mayer products?

I have heard of roger before as he's pretty famous from his assocation with hendrix and bob marley as well...i've never seen his stuff in any of the shops here and the only thing that ever put me off is as you pointed out the shape of some of the pedals would be hard to incorporate into a regular pedalboard of mainly boss ones. from the reviews i've read a lot of people would agree with you about the sound of his stuff........

Ive heard a lot of Roger Mayer of course and a couple of days ago I bought a Cry Baby wah totally modified by a kit Mayer sells, 9090A. Everything inside including the pot is substituted, the only exclusion is the treadle and the foot switch. Do I need to tell you that this is the best wah I ever played?
There is a knob selecting different coil and capacitor values for six different combinations, all from vintage mellow tones to more modern treblish.
Theres no ice-pick-in-your-ear as the Dunlop Cry Baby or the modern Vox has so much of, its smooth and very sweet sounding. Compared to Boss PW-10, and this is quite good, the difference is huge.

Goran, I've heard of this kit before and I'm rather tempted by it. Maybe if I bought a second hand "not working" cry baby it would be a good project. It looks a little complicated as a mod, mainly due to external modifications for the dials, so It would be hard to bring myself to do it to my crybaby

I dont think its that complicated, there are clear instructions for it. But Mayer dont sell 9090A any longer (as far as I know), replaced by the Golden Lion mod.
Ive used wah very much the last week, more than in many years, the 9090A is very good and musical!
