I've been using an SM57 for all instrument recordings for as long as I can remember.

SM-57's are the standard....all the pro's use them, good buy..congrats.......we use 58's for our vocal stuff.great mics... ...i've used a sennheiser 825 (their version of a 57) on the marshall with good results..lately i've been trying out a pair of AKG D770's we had in our mic case...we originally got these way,way back for our original drummer as a pair of overheads but reading some engineers reports on other sites they have got really good results on guitar cabs with these... so lately i've been using them on each amp to get the full effect in the mix.....i like the mic grabber......i use a couple of mini mic stands like you see on an announcers desk,i normally mic the speaker off centre of the cone near the edge about 30/40 mm away from the grillcloth....:G]

So do we.
SM57 for instruments noises.
SM58 for human voices.

I've also got an SM11, in addition to the SM57, that I sometimes stuck inside the soundhole of acoustic guitars,.
