Went past a shop a couple of days ago and in the window they had the usual mish-mash of new/old things... but hidden in there were a Yamaha DI-01 distortion (25) and three unusual-looking pedals I've never heard of before. I can't remember the name, but the logo was a picture of a waveform going across the pedal above the rubber tread, and they were each a solid colour all over. There was an analogue delay, a chorus, and a flanger. I think they were green, orange, and a kind of red or purple, but I didn't do more than glance at them really. They were 50 each, labelled as "80s".
Anybody have any ideas what they might be? Unfortunately I won't be going by there again for a while... |

I couldn't hack it. I went back and bought the DI-01, and it turns out those pedals are Solec. They have an analogue delay (green), flanger (red), chorus (metallic blue) and phaser (orange). A bit of googling suggests they're fairly generic inside, and may be the same as some Electra models.
I won't be having them, but if anybody's interested, they're in Big Deal in Leeds, UK. |

Does the Yamaha sound like a copy of the DS-1? |

Dunno, I've never tried a DS-1
The Yamaha does sound nice though. I've yet to give it a thorough session, but my initial impression was 'smooth and firm'. I need to have another go with it before I can say anything that makes sense. |

Thanks for your reply, yep, if you do not know the sound of a DS-1 it may be difficult to hear any similarities in sound. Do you have any other dist. where the Yamaha comes close to?[The sound of the DS-1 is quite distinctive, but has been copied by a lot of other companies in the 80s [Tokai, Yamaha, Aria etc.]
Reason why I thought it may sound like a Boss DS-1 is that the Yamaha does have similar layout for the controls, yes it does have a different look, after all it is a Yamaha.
Does the pedal have a socket for an AC adaptor? I have a Phaser from same series and that pedal does not have a socket for AC outlet,
Cheers!!

Hi nathanscribe & Guys
Here is a link to all the Yamaha Effectors in that series. This was posted about (2) years ago, so it's worth reviving.
Be warned, not all browsers will display the pages, on this link. FireFox 3.x is one of them.
If you back track to the main (homepage), there are many more old catalogs on that ink as well.

DI-01 http://brochures.yokochou.com/effector/yamaha/1980/en_p1314.html
nathanscribe, I also have one of these, if you drive it very hard, it produces the old 70's multiple overtones effect, while not always very musical, & it can be a bit hit & miss, I don't know of any of the Boss pedals that I own that can do this.
Mine was just barley recovered from going into landfill, I posted the story ages ago.
I'll tell you a little secret, & don't let anyone else know the compressor is highly sought after, & the Flanger is the same, especially sought out by keyboard players. The Res control on the Flanger is off the planet, & it also has a manual control.
I would be interested to hear any more of your feedback onthe DI-01.
Did your come with the battery cover & Silver screw?
Regards Dr. Bob

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the link to the Yamaha effects. I remember you telling your story about the landfill, I think you also rescued some amps from being trown away.
I have the phaser from the series. Does it sound good? Yep, classic 4 stage phaser. Not as powerful as the Ibanez ones, but still good.
I remember reading on Jacques site that those Yamaha pedals sound descent but nothing special. It is certainly true for the Phaser. Having seen the Dist. pedal it make me think of the Boss DS-1, but then you say it does sound different. Is it perhaps closer to a MXR Dist. +?
It is interesting to see that the Chorus looks like a Tokai Chorus. Again the Dist. from the Tokai series sounds like a DS-1. I have an Aria which is also close to a Boss DS-1, okay not a straight copy, but it is going for that sound.
I can see what you are saying about the Yamaha Flanger, have bidded on that one in the past but lost out. Some day I will found one, but it is not a must for now. |

I'll have to compare the Yamaha to my home-made MXR copy... hadn't thought of that.
I'll open it up and take some photos later. |

Finally got round to making some comparisons here!
And yes, Dr Bob, it came with the battery cover and screw
There's no DC inlet exactly, and if you look at the pics on the "internals" thread, you can see there's a multi-pin connector that is usually covered up. I presume that was for when the pedals were screwed into the base/case visible on the above link.
Anyway, on to the sound:
I received a MIT DS-1 this morning (M5223AL version) and that struck me as bright & brittle with a rough 'surface' if that makes sense. The Yamaha DI-01, in comparison, is rounder, smoother. The DS is buzzier, the DI more controlled.
The tone pot on the DI seems to function differently to the DS - on the Boss, it seems to be more a frequency roll-off, but the Yamaha imparts a subtle boost to the chosen frequency, so you don't lose the bottom end so much when raising the tone.
The DI seems capable of more subtlety overall - that's not saying the DS is a bad pedal, I'm sure I'll get plenty of use from it - they each will do the job in different cases.

They do look nice: One question, on the Octaver pedal -

Can anyone suggest what the polarity switch might do? My Japanese is fairly rusty, and the conceptual diagrams don't seem to help... |

Here's the schematic: http://www.schematicheaven.com/effects/korg_oct1_octave.pdf
Looks like it simply inverts the signal. |
