g'day guys,

I am currently looking after our guitarist's gear while he's away - and having a blast playing with his DD-3! I found that I liked using it clean, with a treble boost before it to make it really shimmer (and stand out more from my clean signal). It really sounds a treat when combined with the Big Muff pi in a seperate channel, as you get these bright points of delay leaping out of a sea of fuzz... I guess the next thing would be to try it with a pitch-shifter (PS? HM? Any thoughts?) of some sort :)

Delay after the SYB-3 _really_ makes that particular beastie sound a lot warmer, to the point where I don't think I can sell it like I was planning!

Things not to do? Well, Big Muff pi + DD-3 is _not_ a good idea!

cheers,
chris/bass/idoru

I've never put a bass thru my DD-3, but I bet that'd sound pretty cool. (what was that old Pink Floyd song where they put a bass thru an echo box?)

as for other suggestions, I can heartily recommend the HM-2 as a bass distortion pedal. it doesn't nail my 'ideal' distorto-bass tone, but it I like it nonetheless.

among Boss' PS-series of pedals, I only have experience with the PS-2; however, the PS-2 is not very flattering to a bass guitar. if you have a PS-5, please do let us know your opinion of how it sounds with a bass. (I'm particularly interested in how a bass sounds with the PS-5's "octave up" function, e.g to help cop the sound of a 12-string bass from a regular 4-string bass)....

'One of these days' from "Meddle" (it may be 'years', not 'days' - I'm a little hazy on song titles).

Double tracked, delayed basses - surely that was the influence for "Big Bottom"? ;)

And, ooops - HR, not HM... *smacks forehead* Thanks for the PS-2 heads-up, I just missed one on ebay and I'm thinking that was a good thing!

For a good example of bass with +1 octave, try "Schism" by Tool. It's clearly audible in the slowdown in the middle - IIRC it's a Digitech Bass Whammy.

As for bass and delay sounding cool, well, I did lose about 2 hours before I realised how long I'd been playing for - I love new toys!

cheers,

yeah, that's the 'Floyd song I was thinking of... the only vocal goes "one of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces," or something like that... was that using a Binson(?!?) Echoplex?

and no problem about the HM/HR mixup ... IMHO, the HR-2 sounds better as a pitch shifter than the PS-2, sound quality-wise, but the HR-2 is not very intuitive or easy to use. and the PS-2 isn't bad with a guitar. see more comments in a previous thread here:

I would have tried out a bass thru a PS-5 today at guitar center, but the boss pedal demo area was already in use, and I couldn't wait around....

I made that in 1999, SYB-3 and DD-3 :

hold mode is very cool with a delay...

Yes it was Pink Floyd 'One of these Days' using the Binson Echorec which is a really old (and now rare and expensive) echo unit which used a rotating magnetic disc as opposed to tape or IC's

They sound great and they do sometimes crop up on eBay but for the prices they fetch, I think I'll stick to my DM-2!

It's interesting that you mention the DM-2 - I've been using an Alesis Quadraverb in my rack, and I find that the more musical uses for delay are under 330ms. *sigh* guess I'll have to get one - as Omar says, you can never have enough delay pedals!

idoru - you're absolutely right - you can never have too many delay pedals. I've got six of the blighters now and I find that I like using different ones for certain types of echo I need. There isn't one that covers all bases really.

I also have a really old Valve Watkins Copicat which I use from time to time which I really like. Even with the tape motor switched off it doubles up as a cracking pre-amp pedal for a sweet sounding boost.

surprisingly a lot of guitar FX sound neat thru bass. most of boss distortions sound great, and so does most modulation. (particualrly the HF-2 for some reason.) idoru, if you can get your hands on a FT-2, try it with your bass and see what happens.

So-called guitar pedals that I currently use are a PH-2 and a HR-2. Both work quite well on bass... The PH-2 suffers a little from level drop, while the HR-2 has a slap-back delay on notes pitched up. I use a blended fx loop for all my effects, so I don't mind little quirks with pedals as they're often not all that noticeable.

Oh, and the SYB-3 stayed after all - with the HR-2 after it + delay it sounds amazing.

when I was a bass player, I loved to play with FZ-2 : boost mode for "kick-ass sound" in the amp loop effect and two different distortion/fuzz, big hard sounding !
