Hi to all I just wanted to share my recent experience. As you all probably remember I posted up the differences I heard between the MIJ DS-2 and the MIT DS-2. Well yesterday I had the chance to try two MIJ DS-2's, according to the serial numbers one is December 1987 and the other is March 1988. The Dec. 1987 has milder tones in mode II, slightly less bite or punch and in mode I seems more like the long dash silver screw DS-1. The March 1988 has a punkier touch to it in both modes but doesn't have that low end crunch in mode I. Apart from that the 2 pedals are very similar, another difference is the silver sticker and baseplate, the March 1987 has a longer sticker and therefore the baseplate rubber has a different shape. I'm still pretty sure that if Cobain ever did use the DS-2 it was sure to be MIJ. |

Kurt Cobain did use a DS-2, you can see it clearly in the "Muddy banks of the Whiskah" booklet. He also used it for the acoustic guitar on the "Man who sold the world" from Unplugged 94.
He used a DS-1 prior to that on "Nevermind" and the accompanying tour, but when it broke, his guitar tech switched it for a DS-2 he had bought as a spare some time earlier.
I have no idea if either pedal is MIJ or MIT. Considdering the fact that Kurt himself bought the DS-1 new in 93 just before the recording of Nevermind, and his tech bought the DS-2 new on tour in 94, I'd say both pedals are MIT. |

Comparing two DS-2's so close together in dates even if one is MIJ and the other is MIT is going to be hard.. that the sound would be very different unless Boss did some major circuit board changes the minute MIT production started would be unusual as in other models component changes seemed a bit more gradual over time...we have discussed before the little difference between late MIJ and early MIT models of various boss effects..my own take on it is possibly the value of some components 'drift' causing the variation in sound....especially in older pedals
sniffin...did you look inside both for any difference in components or for signs of any modding...?.... |

| Ok I'll try and get some photos of both circuit boards but in the meantime I would just like to add that at a first glance of both circuit boards there didn't seem to be any differences apart from the colour of the electrolytic caps and the resistors. The other thing I would like to add is that, when I compared the MIJ to the MIT, I had an October 1988 MIJ and a 2004 MIT pedal so there probably were alot of differences in the circuit boards. One thing I have seen, googling up DS-2, is that there are missing components on the modern MIT circuit boards right up near the DC transformer plug, a few transistors and resistors are missing on the MIT version which are however present on the MIJ version. I can confirm that there were no signs of modding on either MIJ pedals. |
