I took one of the buffers out, and it sounded much better

What you dislike about FZ3 ?

What tone are you looking for ?

There is a stage inside FZ3 that is based on the fuzz face. Replacing the two transistors there with Germanium npn transistors will make the tone "warmer". Use of sockets is recommended and try different transistor gains.

I have one as well and it is spotless....the problem i have is this is probably one of the lowest production numbers of a compact from boss..(15,000 i think) so modding it takes away from collectibility in the future...on the other hand the mod suggested by Nyquist 5 on the link is very appealing to me..i wouldn't mind having a fuzzface clone on my 'board.....

That`s the one I did on my FZ3, but used some 5117 I had kicking around.
The 5117 equates to a 2N3904, but it has that vintage mojo

For those with fuzzy memories, 5117 trans were used in vintage wah pedals

Hmmm... still think I'd build a FF clone and leave my FZ-3 alone to gather dust and increased value

Ah the $64,000 question ...to mod or not to mod...?......will the FZ-3 ever be as desirable as the VB-2 or the SP-1 etc... personally i don't think so unless some big name player start using it.... i think Billy Corgan was seen with one and the guy out of the Manic Street Preachers used one as well for a while but apart for them ......i had read that Boss did base the voicing of this pedal partly on a silicon fuzzface sound..i've also read using it first in the chain of pedals (even before the wah or volume pedals) and with a battery improves the sound and increases the volume slightly but i've never bothered to try.....

I don't think placing it first in the chain will make any difference. This is true for fuzz faces that have a low input impedance and interact nicely with with the guitar volume. The FZ3 has a buffer and an amplifier stage before the fuzz-face stage so it doesn't matter if it's first or between other pedals.

Personally, I would build a silicon fuzz face with BC108 transistors instead. They sound cool and they are quite easy to build, only 9 components.

Hi cctsim

Any FF circuit topology in preference? (Link) ?
BC108 Metal cans or plastic?
Any particular gains you prefer.

I have a small collection of metal can 108's from way back in my teens.
And I've been keen to use some for a project or two.

Regards Dr. Bob

The two "definitive" FF links that I've found:

Hi Dr. Bob,

I built this one

http://fuzzcentral.ssguitar.com/fuzzface/fuzzfacenpnschematic.gif

with metal can BC108s and gains of 120 each.

The only mods I did were to change the output capacitor to 0.047u because I had only a 100k potentiometer for the volume. I also added 47p ceramic capacitors between the collector and basis electrodes of each transistor to smooth things out a bit.

Anyone thought about modifying the tone controls? Its a copy of the BMP tone control, minus R29.
http://rkerkhof.ruhosting.nl/Taas/Mods/Big%20Muff.htm
The FZ3 has a mid flats type circuit, but R29 gives the pot a bit if a treble boost.
