I like my 1.5 year old computer with Vista Ultimate but damn if I can't update to SP1. I've tried 3 times now. I guess I'm relegated to uninstalling McAfee & unplugging all external USB & FireWire devices in hopes it'll make a difference.

It's quite the horror story on the 'net where some people experience the BSOD after an SP1 update attempt. I'm not looking forward to reloading from scratch as it usually takes about a week until I get everything reinstalled, configured, & tweaked.

Maybe I can do a clean install on my 2nd drive (removing & saving my original drive) & restore everything from my external once I get everything right. I should take an image of it.. frustrating to say the least as I'm fully aware that future apps are going to require SP1.

Hi DeFrag

I'm taking a guess that your hard drive/s are too large to Ghost?

From what I hear on the Tech & security channels, MS have dropped development on Vista,
& have now released Windows 7, It's in public beta, & a very mature OS compared with Vista.
The reports of Windows 7 Beta are glowing, compared to, what I have heard from the very start about Vista.

Just my 2 cents DeFrag, for what it's worth.

Because of the Engineering Apps that I have to run for work, I stayed with XP.

But I only use windows in our Eng, Lab at work.
Home, it's a totally different ball park.

I don't envy your task.
Good luck

Regards Dr. Bob

I use imaging software all the time at work (Ghost, Acronis, V2i Protector) but not so much at home.
After years of using these products I've come to a realization:

They're best used to propagate images among like hardware during a rollout or restoring a baseline within a commercial environment.

My home computers are usually in a constant state of flux. True, over the years, my reinstalls have gotten alot leaner & meaner with fewer applications etc. & I can usually be back up & running in a couple hours. A few hours after that, most is as it was before save for a week of tweaking.

Imaging home computers that change alot for me at least, would take what basically amounts to a full nightly backup. I've got 3 300GB drives (including 1 external) so I could mirror the 2 inside or image any one to another.

So, what I've done for the last few years is simply keep multiple copies (up to 6) of my important files: docs, apps, zips, sites, & pics. This way, I can do a quick reinstall on a drive & copy stuff back over & by using an organized text file of sequencing steps & serials I can pretty much be back in order in a day. I just hate hacking around on a system anymore.

Dual - booting system here with Mac OSX and Mac OS 9. Managed to get that to happen off an external hard drive. It took a while but then it worked and has not failed.

If that drive melts down, there's the internal hard drive with OS 9, or the other back up drive with OS 9.
