the one i have my PH-2 set for is Rate 12:00-2:00, Depth max, Res 9:00, and mode 1. It kind of gives me a nice shift for clean sounds and an almost light flange sound with distortion. But I do admit the Small stone is a little better sounding and alot easier to set.
The PH-2 is perfect with a delay.. that's right.. it could be tricky to get a good phaser sound.. but you'll just have to play with it and you will find what youre looking for..
I haven't had a PH-2 for years, but remember that its forte was 'in your face' phase. Not one that you'd have on for subtle shifting when strumming a few chords. It's more of special effect. Stay away from the trimpot also. A HCFX review convinced me to tweak it to 'introduce more bass into the effect' but didn't mention it would also make my pedal make and annoying whoosh whenever it was tuned on.
i thought i wasnt a Phaser guy until i got my PH-1r. they claim that the PH-2 is more for contemporary or jazz. i could never find a use for it in my setup really.
one idea is too run it in some kind of loop (ie: LS-2) and adjust the level of wet/dry. I use my PH-3 in the loop of the GT-8. Having the ability to mix the sounds makes it easier to find what you're looking for.
Mixing wet / dry is a good idea with phaser no metter if you have a PH-2 or some other phaser. I think the PH-2 works best with single note lines especially in combination with a compressor. But it's not my favourite for chord strumming too
This is due to the fact that the common vintage phaser uses almost every time only four stages for phasing. The PH-2 has two settings for 10 and 12 stages. IMHO that's why the phasing is too strong for chords.
sorry folks i have to disagree...i have the ph2 and i use it in mode 1 and with a bit of my ch1 mixed in and spread in stereo i think it sounds great...i agree mode 2 is a bit over the top...i had an orginal small stone years ago and to be honest i wasn't mad about it.....i also had at the time a lend of a musicman 2x10 combo while my own was being repaired and it had a built in phaser which i really liked and i remember leaving the small stone under the bed and just using the amp's..i have never tried a mxr phase 90 etc but like i said in a previous post i'm not going to pay outrageous prices for vintage pedals (i'm not a collector) to use on gigs and watch them get trashed by drunken punters..if a ph1 came my way for a reasonable price i would certainly try it out...but for now the good ol' ph2 is staying... just as a matter of interest...i saw pics of peter green's setup and he was using a tr2 and an rv3 which have both got bad press.... and the great scotty moore uses a dd3 and a boss chorus(don't know which one) to replace his ray butts amp with built in echo which is now probably in a museum somewhere......(thats the amp he used with the king).....sorry if i'm ranting....
