| What would you guys think the best (but reasonably priced) rack mounted power amp for a guitar setup? I'm looking for a 1 or 2 space rack mounted power amp for my GP-100. Right now I've got the Geep running through a Crate TV-50 (power amp section only), and I need (OK I'm wanting) to lighten the load a bit when I go out for a gig. |

Depends on what your looking for .. i use a Thomann own brand S-100(european internet guitar shop) stereo power amp 1U high to power the wet side of my rig that works fine..it puts out 65 watts aside into 8 ohms in stereo or 100 watts into 4 ohms i'm using it into a couple of homemade 1 x 12's with 8 ohm vintage 30's and it's plenty....heres a pic of the rig to give you a better idea...the power amp is the silver unit on the bottom and it cost about 110 which isn't bad..i think any decent solid state power amp would do unless you have your heart set on a valve one...possibly you would pick a valve power amp up cheaper stateside but even 2nd hand they are very pricey in europe...

heres a pic taken before a gig to give you a better idea of it all set up...

Hey Franzoni - I don't have my heart set on anything, except for a lighter rig. The amp you have pictured looks like something I'd be interested in. Been on evilbay, and they want way too much for the Marshall 8008's and even the Rocktron 1RU amps.
1 RU amps are pretty rare, especially where I live, unless you want to get stupidly expensive |

Hi Merv
I looked at the 8008 but as you said your paying for the name as much as anything else... i found my power amp in a different part of the shop in the studio gear section...to me a power amp is a power amp... ...even at 1U it's still a bit heavy but not too bad...i tink these sort of amps are used to power studio monitors..i think in your neck of the woods Samson make one thats similar and a few 2U ones as well that might suit you....and now the little franzonis are waiting for me to bring them to the zoo.. ....later... |

Hi Merv
http://www.amazon.com/Samson-Audio-Servo-200-Watt-Amplifier/dp/B001F4TRKO
this is the one i was thinking of thats similar to mine..just check what sort of input/outputs it for ease of use...mine has jack/XLR inputs and jack/speakon outputs as well to give you a few options..i don't know what sort of sized venues you play but i've found my power amp plenty enough for the stage and if the stereo cabs need a hand i stick a couple of spare AKG mics on them and run it through the PA... |

I like it! It's got way more than enough power for my needs, so that's PLENTY of headroom. Most definitely will check this guy out and see if I can score one.
THANKS! |

Hi MervsMods & Guys
A couple of years ago I picked up an old Marshall 8008 Blackface not the Gold face, 1-RU 80W+80W It was slightly distressed & therefroe it was also a bargain.
Belive me MervsMods, it's still one heavy MOFO. But lighter than the Mesa 50-50.
Don't be fooled by the "ValveState" description, on the front panel. There isn't tube anywhere in it, not even a pilot lamp. But there is a red LED. The "Valvestate" refers to a switchable feedback loop one side being marked "Valvestate"
In my book a gross misrepresentation on Marshall's part.
Still it's LOUD!!!! - really LOUD!!!
It can rock all day, if you run it at "Full Tilt" fit a small fan in rear of your mobile rack case.
Not sure if this was any help?
Mine is currently resting, the mains switch failed on me, I rebuilt the internals of the switch, & it works most of the time. But it's not 100% reliable.
If any of you guys know if Marchall or some dealer sells the Mains switch & push-button, I would like to know, so I can replace it.
Regards Dr. Bob

Hi Dr Bob
I was able to get the thomann power amp i use cheaper than the Marshall 8008 secondhand here in Dublin.... the thomann was 110 and the cheapest 8008 i couple find was 150....there was a broken one going a bit cheaper at the time but i couldn't be sure i could fix it ...8008's aren't made anymore so there aren't many knocking around... |

Hi FRANZONI & Guys
As I mentioned, my Marshall 8008 was distressed when I bought it. I'll bet good money, that it has a few hair raising stories of it's own to tell.
I do remember the faulty 8008 that you speak of, I believe we, talked about it a while back, either on an old forum post, or in a PM.
Would I buy it (8008) again? probably not, I still prefer the tone, & shear power of my Mesa 50-50 tube 2-RU. But my back will strongly disagree with me on this point.
And I belive that is the main reason that MersMods, originally started this thread.
The Mesa 20-20 Dyna power tube amp is a good unit, but very difficult to find in Oz. And very very VERY loud for a 1-RU 20W + 20W tube amp. And It's about the same weight as the Marshall 8008.
