Hi The_Doc & Guys

Thanks for the internal pics.

So what is so special about the Secret Black Goop?
It the pedal touted to be implanted with Germanium or Silicon?

I guess they also use hookup wire made from Unobtainium.

All cynicism aside though.
- It does sound pretty good, going by your recent audio demos.

Regards Dr. Bob

According to the maker, the Britt Face is "...hybrid design using Germanium for the soft clipping and Silicon for the higher gain & stability"...so that's similar to the Retroman Sybil I guess, but without the ability to separate the two for different tones. The sum of the two is still good to my ears.

Dr. Bob - out of curiousity I opened up two more Burford pedals I have - the 'UFO (Repeater Tremolo) and the 'Sonic Ranger' (treble booster) and neither of them have the black blob so I guess the Britt Face design must be unique in some way.

Just a guess, but could it be for temperature stability?

Oh, and PM sent, The_Doc. I owe you one of these:

Hey DasBeef - thought I should resurrect this thread to see if you decided on the Britt Face in the end - I've been looking out for one on ebay for you but I've not seen any - I'll PM you if I do.

I put some soundclips together for nathanscribe and thought they might interest the members here. Not brilliant, just quick spur of the moment improvs but will give you a feel for how I like my fuzz . All done just with a drum loop so that the effects pedal can be heard and using the strat as per my avatar

Here's a Fulltone '69 (germanium) Fuzz:-

A Fulltone '70 (silicon) Fuzz:-

http://www.mediafire.com/?xmjthmfwxim

A prototype Fuzzrite clone built by the same guy who makes the Britt Face:-

http://www.mediafire.com/?nmkn2giumlk

An old Top Gear Fuzz (possibly modded - not sure):-

http://www.mediafire.com/?kzzazlkeqdz

and, my favourite - a Retroman Sybil (germanium / silicon hybrid) fuzz:-

Hope you enjoyed them

Hey! I am still looking.
I have built a mark one of the 1 knob fuzz, but it didn't work. My soldering skills are somewhere between rubbish and non existent. Ha ha! I am waiting to get a lesson from the electrician in work, then I am going to have another stab. I did however pick up a Biyang FZ-7, which I actually quite like. It has 3 fuzz modes, which are all pretty useable.
As for the Britt Face, I am still humming and hoing. I to have been keeping an eye on ebay, but nothing popping up. I really like the sound of it from the clips. I am however, going to wait until I build an operational one knob fuzz, and take it from there.
Thanks for taking the time to do upload them soundclips.

No probs mate and please let us know how you get on with your DIY fuzz - I'm thinking of doing the same but take your soldering skills minus about 100% and you've got mine - so my effort is going to take a long, long, long time to come about

Let's share the pain of our learning curve - maybe a new thread - "how to build a fuzz without damaging yourself!" (as I'm very likely to set fire to myself with my DIY skills...)

Hi The_Doc

Great sound demo's of some of your Fuzz Collection.

And might I add,
Some wicked guitar playing as well.

I've already added these into my archive.

Regards Dr. Bob

This guy isn't building at the moment, but the clips sound pretty good. There is a "fussdrive" as well as the "lessdrive".

There was a lessdrive for sale on eBay that the seller offered to me for US$50 the other day, so they are OK prices used.

The other resource for fuzzes (build your own) is here:
http://www.smallbearelec.com/Projects/BearFace/BearFace.htm
If you can get a hand with the soldering I'm sure they will sound prety good.

Thanks for the BearFace link Laurie - that's saved me much hunting around and it's a good place to start.

BTW - I've seen those ElectroniX pedals before and really fancied them but the postage / import taxes to the UK put me off at the time - I'm keeping my eyes open for any coming up on UK eBay.

Anyway, my sleeves are rolled up, my safety goggles are on, my First Aid kit is at the ready and my family is hunkered down in the fallout shelter, as I've decided that I'm going to create my fuzz monster. It could take many months but I'll report back when I've got something that makes a sound - however good or bad. Thanks DasBeef for inspiring me to get my ass into gear and give this a go - I owe you many

Dr. Bob - thanks for your kind comments on the soundclips - I had a blast putting those together - there's a couple of bits that I might develop into a full arrangements at some point - I'll post them up if it comes about.

Good luck (<- safety goggles, not sunglasses)

I have a "matched" pair of Ge transistors from Small Bear sitting the parts drawer. At some point, I'm going to build one myself

I just bought a Hartman BC108 Silicon fuzz, and even if its silicon transitors it sound very sweet, lots of gain too, a great Fuzz Face clone!
On the way to me is a Cornell "The first Fuzz", this a germanium Fuzz Face clone and my expectations is that this is a really good one.

Anyone have an opinion on the Diaz Tx Square Face?

Analogman Sunface is an option that I know some just love.....

I'll again throw out Skreddy's stuff....I'll be picking up a Pig Mine ASAP.
