Thing is, I like the tone of my Fender Deville but even with all the volumes as low as possible, its too loud at times. Is there a decent Power attenuator which can reach what would technically be 0.5 or 0.2 on the volume knob?

Cheers

I don't own one, but I have a good friend who swears by the Dr-Z air-brake.

Hey,
All the decent power attenuators are fairly expensive. I'm tempted to recommend trying a few practice amps?

yeah the best power attentuator around i think are the THD hotplates. but they should be around 300 pounds. i recently read somewhere something about making your own i'll see if i can find that article later.

I put these in my Marshall a few years back...i went for the pentode version x 4(to replace four EL34's in the output section) to bring it down to 32 watts...i think your Deville uses two 6L6's so two of these should bring it down to about 16 watts..but don't be fooled ollie 16 watts in a house is still very loud....i have a 14 watt selmer as a practice amp and even turned halfway has Mrs F on my case.............

FYI.. The Devilles have a linear volume pot that can (& should IMFO) be changed out for a log pot which should be easier to keep the volume at respectable levels in case you don't get an attenuator.

To me It's lowest volume is fine, but my mother thinks it's too loud!

I'll look up on changing the pots

Thanks

I don't know how they are now but years ago they would cause harm to your amp

none of the att. i've ever used caused any harm to my amps...when the Orange amp's are in use I have to cascade them into each other so that equates into 100% of the time...and i've used just about very one to hit the market in the last 15 yrs.....the hands down worst was the Marshall Power Brake...however the THD Hotplate is the tits...DO NOT skimp on price...you're talking about the integrity and preservation of your beloved tone...price should not be an option

I put these in my Marshall a few years back...i went for the pentode version x 4(to replace four EL34's in the output section) to bring it down to 32 watts...

I've been thinking about those, bringing my 50 watt JCM 800 down to about 20 watts.
My only concern is tone, how do EL84's compare to EL34's tonewise, or in other words, will my Marshall sound like an AC30 if I do this?

Did your Marshall benefit tonewise, or has it become completely different?

Hi Dirk

My Marshall is a superbass head and i use it for guitar,as i'm sure you know EL84's bring a slightly more trebley type sparkle/shimmer to the sound,i'm happy with what it did to the sound of the superbass head as i didn't have to go changing caps etc for guitar..... plus it allowed me to run it into a 2x12 with a pair of 25 watt greenbacks with a level of comfort that i wouldn't blow the speakers and not having to drag a 4x12 around...... so yes i suppose it did change the original sound but personally i like what they did..i like to think of it as the best of both, some Boutique amp makers claim their amps are a cross of a Vox and a Marshall, possibly this is a way of achieving the same effect on ther cheap.......i've had a few offers for the marshall from other players but it's not for sale ever...........i had thought of mixing two EL 34's with two of the tonebones to see what it sounded like..thats the beauty of them,is that you can mix two different types of valves in a quad valve setting, once you keep them as a pair... the only thing about EL84's is they don't last as long as some of the other type of power valves but the plus side is they are a lot cheaper to buy......i'll probably put JJ's in the tonebones(as it will take any brand of EL84)the next time as i have them in the musicman(KT77'S) in the Selmer combo (EL84's) and am very happy with them......although the T.A.D. valves they came with sound very good as well...
