| If the lack of contemporary guitar heroes means the death of over-the-top fretboard wankery, then I say let's speed this funeral up. |

somehow i thought you would say that.... .... over the top wankery...yep with you on that one ....but guys who can play and 'say something' with a guitar solo i think are relevent...Gilmour is one who springs to my mind who by and large adds to the song with some nice lead line or using the whammy pedal/pedal steel etc.....
Do you listen to any traditional turkish music..? some of those people are pretty good and dexterious from what i've seen and heard.... |

Actually, there are two streams of Traditional Turkish music - Turk Sanat Muzik, which follows from Ottoman tradtions & to my ears, is pretty awful, & the folk tradition, in which the balama is the main instument. I love the sound of these, but the singing that usually accompanies is a developed taste (one which I have yet to acquire, even after 13 years). I've tried playing one, but never got comfortable - note the large oval body.

Yep they look pretty good....i used to go to greece(crete) quite a lot,we also did some gigs there... i had a few jams on my mandolin and acoustic with a couple of those guys.....interesting to say the least... especially while milling a bottle of homemade raki.... ..i always meant to get my hands on a bouzouki but the tuning is a bit mad coming from the guitar.....why is dexterity on the guitar frowned upon lately while people of other cultures who it has to be said are superb players and obviously very skilled musicians celebrated...?... |

| Any of you guys listen to Darkest Hour? Some of their guitar work is the best in the metal genre I've heard lately. |

Guitar dexterity has a bad name probably because of over-the-top fretboard wankery. To stick with our Turkish folk example - when you sit in the bar when these guys are playing, the crowd may nod with approval at the player's ability, but what they really want to do is sing along - & once they start singing, there's no stopping them. In other words, the playing is to secondary to the song.
Another great example that I was thinking about on the way to work this morning was 1960s Motown: how many of us can name members of Motown's house band? How many of us can deny that they were great musicians? How many of them were ever guilty of wankery? How many unforgetable classic songs did they create?
Songs that make people dance & sing Songs that make people want to play air guitar |

James Jamerson was handy enough on the bass....but i take your point he was melodic with his bass lines and hooks....i'm not disagreeing with everything you say on this...i don't have much time with these guys on you tube to see how fast they can play or the likes of Malmsteen to be honest but there is still a place for a good player who can play a decent solo.....even steve jones of the sex pistols can and does from time to time...in fact an overlooked guitar hero.... and a lot cleverer than the 'three chord trick' merchant he was portrayed as,he played all the guitar and bass parts on the sex pistols first album and critics didn't want to believe it so they invented a story that they had to get a session head in...... ...... |

I think the problem is bigger than just a guitar hero. I think the entire rock scene is embarrassing. Since the 1980's there has only been two bands that have really sparked my interest which is
1) Nickleback 2) 311
The rest? In my opinion mediocre crap. |

311 is phenomenal. Massively tight live, but certainly not guitar heroes.
In a perfect world, people like Les Paul and Stanley Jordan would be true guitar heroes, not just on the tongues of musicians and aficionados. |

Agreed. I love 311. Love how they mix it up. Little rap, regge, rock, funk... The thought of it sounds horrible, yet, they pull it off and it's amazing! |
