Hello all.. finally decided to stop being a lurker and register for the forum!!

I got a used GS-10.. works beautifully except I get the message "No Battery !!" when I start up the unit.

I cracked it open and replaced the battery with the same type (CR2032 'button' type). I took my multi-meter to the old battery and sure enough, it was dead. Now the problem is that I still get the same "No battery" message even with the new battery installed. My multi-meter reads a full 2.98-volts (close enough to 3-volts) and I can even trace the voltage on the circuit board away from the battery so I know it's not the connection between the battery holder and the circuit board.

Looking at the documentation for the GS-10, they want you to take it to an "authorized repair center" to do the battery change. I'm wondering if there is some voodoo required to make the battery work to be able to store my patches!

Any hints at all would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi donokono

Welcome to the forum from Australia.

I'm not 100% familiar with the GS-10,
but have my eye on one that's up for sale here in OZ.

You might want to try doing a "Factory Reset" on the GS-10, it might flush out some crappy data out of the registers.
See if it's in your user manual.

Don't be offended, but did you replace the battery with the polarity the right way around?
(Techs ask these kind of stupid questions).

Or you could just email Roland US in your local area.
Sometimes it's better to leave an email, it puts less pressure on the service Tech, than a phone call.

Good luck.

Regards Dr. Bob

Thanks for the suggestions, Dr. Bob... from another Bob..!

I'm 99.999% sure the battery is not in upside-down.. (can never be 100% sure about anything these days!)

I'll see if I can find out about doing a factory reset... even though with the battery not working correctly the unit forces me to re-write all the default patch data every time I power it up!

I think that I just might email Roland... I'm in no rush to make and save my own patches at the moment..

It's a blast to play around with.. Try to pick the one you're looking at if you can!

best,,

Hey donokono & Dr. Bob,

The GS-10 looks like a nice unit.

The factory reset procedure is detailed on page 86 of the manual:
Owners Manual: http://media.rolandus.com/manuals/GS-10_OM.pdf
Addendum: http://media.rolandus.com/manuals/GS-10_AD.pdf

Looks pretty straight forward, let us know if it works.

I had a similar problem with my half-rack Boss Pro SE-50 Stereo Effects Processor; originally when I got it the display was totally garbled when I turned it on, opened her up and the CR2032 battery was totally flat, replaced it, did a factory reset and its good as new.

Hi Stengah!

Thanks for pointing me to the page in the manual.

I did the factory reset a handful of times and still get the "No Battery !!" message after turning the unit back on. The screen that I see when doing the factory reset is actually the same one I'm presented with after the "no battery" message!

I'm going to poke around a little more today and shoot Roland an email like Dr. Bob suggested...

I'll let you know if I find anything!

Be well..

Hi donokono

Recheck the voltage of the battery,
I have had a number of these that have probably been from old stock sold as new.
And they were around 1.3V after I put a slight load on hen, when I fitted them to gear.
Measure the battery in situ.

Also recheck the polarity
Check the contacts have not become corroded.
If soldered in, check the solder joints & especially if the old battery leaked, onto the PCB.

A Lithium CR2032 coin type battery, should read 3.6 volts when new.
& in my line of work, they are considered flat if they get into the range of 3.0V to 3.1V.

If your battery is already reading 3V, & then 2.98V,
then it may also be old stock.

Check everything - Look hard.
I'm guessing corrosion - damaged track, already old flat battery
or you accident put it in revered.

Good Luck, keep us up to date with your efforts.

One other thought, are you 100% sure, the original battery was a CR2032?

Pleas post some pics -
if you think we can help you out some more.
I see Laurie logged in as well.

Regards Dr. Bob

I have an email in to Roland at the moment... patiently waiting for a reply. I'm going to go find another battery when I'm out and about later today.

Here are a few pics of the innards with and without the battery installed.

Looks clean...!

Here one showing the voltage reading on the DMM .. Hmm... no voltage change when the unit is powered up!! Judging by what Dr. Bob mentioned about the voltage being under 3-volts, maybe that's the problem!?!!? We'll see when I get another new battery..

Thanks a lot to everyone for your help & suggestions...!

I picked up a new battery, it reads over 3.2-volts on the DMM... still same problem dammit!

I guess I'll wait to hear back from Roland customer support..

I snapped a quick photo of the message before the screen switched over to the 'factory reset' screen:

Well, it looks like Roland wants me to send the unit in for repair. Hopefully they'll fix it up good!

Thanks everybody for the ideas!!
