I bought a HM 2 on ebay, believing it was a Taiwan model, but in the picture it showed a bigger space between the M and the 2, which would mean it was a Japan model.
Explained in this thread, the differences: http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4387&whichpage=22
I received it in the mail today, the back states a Taiwan model, but the front is clearly different. Another thing is, the serial number states it is number 033600.
Maybe the earlyest MIT models had left over MIJ lids on them?
Or maybe some one has simply just put it on mine ?
Also, the manual says printed in Taiwan, 87. I thought production started in 88?
Ill put on some pictures. Apologies for the bad bad bad quality.

Anyone got any opinions? Or am i just stupid? haha

there was a production of boss pedals on 87 in Taiwan? i thought the production was moved in Taiwan on 88. or this could mean that there was a dual production (Japan and Taiwan) on 87.

My '87 MIJ looks exactly the same, so yours is could be a MIJ with a wrong backplate on it. However, my serial sticker says 762000 products of Roland, Made in Japan and so does the backplate.
Odd, very odd... |

I don't think we ever concluded that the print on the treadle can be used to determine whether a HM-2 is MIJ or MIT. From looking at your pictures, it very much looks like the production first moved to Taiwan and the printing then changed a bit later. Vicix has one with serial number 093434 that has the later treadle printing and that narrows the gap a bit.
Sadly we don't know exactly when these MIT pedals with 0xxxxx serial numbers was made. I haven't seen a later Japan version than Dirk's 762000 and I haven't seen an earlier MIT than your 033600. Still makes it very hard to date it but I suspect it's from early 1988. The Boss book says that production moved to Taiwan from December 1987 but it doesn't say anything about which pedals they started making there first and we can't always trust the data from the book. |
