Just got an Analog Man DS-1 and after trying it out, I really liked it. Full round distortion with good string separation that cleans up nicely.

I have owned the Keeley DS-1 SEM and Ultra mods, but the Analog Man DS-1 Pro mod rules in my opinion.

i have a jap ds1 (don't know or care about the year)and i'm getting some class sounds out of it...i think with the ds1 the main thing is to watch the tone control ,keep it below halfway and the same with the distortion,as far as i know steve vai and a lot of other players use it like this, more of a booster to push the amp than to generate distortion, when i use it like this i get a nice crunch and use my od2 after it as a booster for soloes or to thicken up the rythmn sound....one of the other posts shows a picture of eric johnson's gear and he is using one now as well,it looks fairly new don't know if it modded in any way....

How would you compare the Analogman DS-1 to a MIJ DS-1? What sets it apart from the Keeley mods?

The Analog Man differs from a stock MIJ DS-1 by being more quiet, and less harsh sounding. The tone knob is actually also very useful in its whole range. It has a more round distortion and has a cleaner sound on the minimum dist setting than the DS-1 MIJ, however you cant get a true clean sound with the Analog Man either.

The Keeley mods have a harsher sound to my ears, and work best with single coils and has a less focused distortion sound. The Keeley mods are like the Analog Man very quiet, and you can get an even cleaner sound on the min dist setting on the Keeley than you can on the Analog Man.

But no matter which mods comes along, I will of course never part with my DS-1 MIJ pedals. They are after all the true originals that started it all...

I posted a review I did for Analogman's mod, here it is in case anyone was interested:

Sound Quality: 10
I am using a customized 79 Fender Telecaster with a Strat neck, Seymour Duncan Hotrails in the bridge and a Duncan Hotstack in the neck, Early 80's Charvel with a Dimarzio Air Zone Humbucker in the Bridge and a mid-80s Charvel with three Dimarzio Single coil pickups, Bridge has a Virtual Vintage Solo, and Neck and Mid are both Virtual2 Neck pickups, Fender Blues Junior 1X12 amp for home recording, various tube amps for live setups. I also use a bunch of other Boss effects with this pedal.

The Analogman DS-1 is the sound I always wanted a stock DS-1 to make. I have played the Taiwan DS-1 and the Japan DS-1 and Analogman's DS-1 is the best sounding distortion pedal I have ever heard.
I usually have the Tone at 11-12 o'clock, the level at about 12 o'clock and the Dist at 3 o'clock. With the stock pedal I always had to really turn the level way up on the pedal and it really never seemed to put out. Analogman's pedal seems to have more of a boost with the level knob. As for the tone knob, WOW, it finally works. You can now adjust it to what you want rather than what Boss makes you have. The Distortion level is what really shines on this mod. On the original when you turn the Dist on 0 it sounds kind of muddy and flat, like the tone knob went out, and the more you crank it up the more broken-up fuzzy it gets and you loose the distinction of the strings. This especially happens if you pick out distorted chords. With the mod and the Dist on 0 it is like an old Boss OD-1 really dirty and clear, the tone doesn't change when you turn up the Dist either. When I have it on 3 o'clock this pedal really shines. The distortion is very smooth and warm and huge and picked out chords sound amazing. This is by far the best money ever spent on any pedal I have ever owned.

Reliability: 10
Extremely dependable, it's a Boss.

I would never play without this pedal.

Customer Support: 10
I have called Boss for other things like replacement rubber bushings where the screw for the battery is and they have always been outstanding.

Overall Rating: 10
I have been performing and recording music for over 22 years. I play everything from Blues Rock to Metal.
If this were stolen I would replace it immediately.

I love that it sounds the way Boss says there stock pedal should sound. Boss says "The DS-1 provides a harder distortion effect for guitar sounds. Instead of toneless, fuzzy distortion, the DS-1 faithfully reproduces all the subtle nuances of your playing dynamics, from whisper-quiet to screaming loud. The onboard Tone control allows you to tailor the overall sound to your liking."
The stock Boss pedal does not do this but Analogman's DOES!

I think I'm going to have to clear out some gear before I can justify buying one, but I plan to get that started soon. My curiousity is going to kill me if I don't grab one of the Analogman DS-1s!

Cheers boss freak!

It will be interesting to hear what you think of it once you have tried it out.
