I spent a few hours this AM setting up my rig for stereo operation ...mind you it took me nearly 25 years to finally use the "other" jack on my pedals...the results were sonically amazing...don't know why I waited so long.
I'm currently using a Boss BCB-60 pedalboard, running stereo out from the Boss RE-20 space echo to two amps; a Fender HRD and a Top Hat CR 1x12 spaced about 9 feet apart. The pedalboard also has an Analogman TS-9, Keeley BD-2, Boss DD-2 and Analogman TR-2.
The spatial echos from the RE-20 running through both amps gave a HUGE wide sound that completely enveloped the room. By stepping on the Tremolo (TR-2) with the RE-20 engaged, the tremolo was bouncing/pulsing back and forth between both amps via the RE-20 echos...it was amazing.
I also plugged in a Boss CE-5 (as a stereo "in") to the RE-20 and that yielded a very wide and thick sound (but I'm not a big fan of chorus).
Then I ran the DD-2 into the RE-20 set to different timing and it yielded a very "Edge-like" stereo operations, especially with the slight OD/chime of the Top Hat. Can't believe I waited this long to try this (the wife was out of the house for a few hours)
Anyone have other recommendations for unique stereo effects? What else do you guys like to experiment with in stereo? |

Hi slideman welcome to the forum. I have a RV-3 and a CH-1 and I played with stereo a bit, but not as much since I got my tube amp (still learning the subleties of it). I also have a DD-5 which has a panning out, for two amps. The possibilities are vast, as you can put so many different combinations of pedals together. This is just one of the many reasons why pedals are superior to multi-effects units.

I am NOT for or against multi-effect units. There is some difficulty implementing a pedalboard that contains single effect units where most of them are mono-input only & but a few actually have stereo outputs.
Here's a quick example:
Say I have a BF-3 Flanger & a DD-5 Delay. I run my signal into the BF-3 & out the 2 outputs provided. The DD-5 only has a mono-input. So what is to be done with the 2nd output from the BF-3? Should you have a subchain that carries only the "Right" channel or "Direct" outputs? This would mean maybe that you wouldn't be able to delay that sub-chain.
If you compound the problem with a full pedalboard like I have, the only way around the supposed issue is to have a little mini patch panel that "collects" all the secondary outputs & subsequently feeds them into your right mixer/PA channel or (2nd) amplifer.
What if you have an RV-5 with stereo inputs & stereo outputs? I could run the BF-3 into the RV-5 perfectly right? What could be done with a PS-5 Pitch Shifter secondary output if it sat before the BF-3? It quite obviously can't plug into the RV-5 input.. that's already fed from both BF-3 outputs. A dilemma to be sure. I wish that ALL Boss pedals had stereo in/outs. Cable expense would be higher sure, but I think the propagation of stereo channels would be simplified.
I state all this because even though I'm not necessarily a proponent of multi-effects units & love my indvidual Boss pedals, there IS an advantage to using a multi-effects unit in that all the stereo for the most part, is handled for you & simply enjoy a mono input with a Left & Right output.. easy.
Here's a link to an earlier post I made about my pedalboard & my little Stereo "collector" Switchcraft jack-panel: http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2000
Slideman, I hope I've helped instead of confused you. Welcome to the forum.. I think you'll like it here! |

Defrag,
Thanks for all the advice...my head hasn't spun around yet , but I get what your saying about the placement of effects relative to the mono/stereo in and out...definitely a dilemna. I was fortunate enough that my CE-5 has a stereo out and my RE-20 has a stereo in and stereo out -- that was what sent me on my way. Also, the Boss BCB-60 pedalboard has a stereo in/out as well, which is very useful. |

DeFrag, this post was in no way a reference to you. I was only kidding when I made disparaging comments concerning multi-effects on the other thread, and those comments where meant as my opinion of multi-effects and are not my opinion of you. PEACE

Hello slideman and welcome.... i'm glad that a few other people have come to appreciate the stereo setup...i can see defrags point about mono inputs and stereo outs.i'm glad to see that wiring up a pedalboard for true stereo is melting other peoples heads as well.... ...your lucky you can run a stereo chorus into the space echo for true stereo.....i run my CH-1 at the end of the chain as the rest of my pedals are mono...the CH-1 doesn't have a 'dry' output so you get a nice stereo effect when on....i use a musicman combo and a marshall head and 2x12 normally for stereo but it's very hard on most gigs to spread the amps enough to get the full effect...was it does do is let me blend the sound of both amps for a nice guitar tone....unfortunately the musicman is off the road at the moment so i'm running a mono setup on the gigs but i love the stereo spread when all is working... |

slightly off topic but has anyone tried running two ouputs off say a BF-3, one to an amp and one to a DD-6 with two outputs off that to two more amps?
that would be three amps(or more if you have more stereo pedals in line)providing an even greater 3D spread of sound. |

Hello controlfreak long time no see bud.... i'm not familiar with what way the BF-3 modulates it's signal between the two stereo outputs..i know if you tried this with the CH-1 the output you would take to the DD-6 would have that 'warbly' out of tune sound like a tape slowing up and down as the CH-1 has no 'dry' output...like i said i'm not sure if this is the case with the BF-3... |

Franzoni,
Yeah, the CE-5 into the RE-20 was completely wild and lush...amazingly full...it's extremely addicting. Coincidently, even though I used a HRD and a Top Hat for this experiment, I also have an old 2x10 musicman that adds a nice snappy/percusive attack as well -- the 10's and the single 12 together are a nice combo, also complemented by the effects set up. Mine is in the shop getting a cap job, bias, tube swap etc. |

When I get bored I rearrange my pedals so it's all stereo after the wah. So chorus is only on one side, which I like, and two different delay pedals are in separate lines which can create polyrhythmic repeats. Two different distortions. It requires shoegazing skills but it's fun. I hope I can post some pics of my pedal board soon. While it's stereo and one that's my normal mono setup.
Has anybody ever tried using a DD-6 and plugging the A out put into the B input? I wonder if it would do anything or add more delay? The guitar would be plugged into A input and the amp into B output.

thats exactly what mine needs as well bro'...the problem is i'm finding it hard to find anyone in ireland who can do this for me... ..Dr Bob was very kind to give me some instruction on how to go about changing the caps and i have a bit of experience in'dabbling' and doing a few mods and running repairs over the years so i will do it myself soon..i like the musicman and the marshall together in stereo..the musicman gives me the 'fender' type snap as you described and the marshall superbass(i have el84 valve converters in it to scale down the power section) now gives me a cross between a vox and a marshall type thing...my ultimate setup would be another musicman combo the same as my own for the stereo effect and the marshall in the middle with a 'dry' sound...i think i would be turfed out of the band if i was to bring this rig to a gig....unless we were doing support for some big name band playing stadiums.... ....... |

i used to run to three amps in my bedroom for a while.. it was my RV-2 running to 2 amps and my CE-3 running to the third. it wasnt really much different sounding and it complicated my setup a little. im all for stereo setups. i dont think pedals are used at their full potential until they are tried in a stereo chain |

What did/do you use for switching between the amps? |

I experimented with a 2 amp setup for a while. I kept one amp clean from the dry out on my DD-3, and the other one with the echo and chorus behind it. That sounds real spacious but I couldn't use it with distortion since I run all overdrive from my amp as opposed to a pedal. Except for the SD-1 which I use as an overdrive. |

AMEN! I couldn't agree more. There are so many fine stereo pedals which are often overlooked. Also fun and complicating is the dry/effect out from the DD2/3. The DC2/3 and MZ2 also run much better in stereo than mono.
I keep my eye out for $30 used amps of decent build quality - with enough juice you can run a wall of BOSS sound.
