What is the simplest and cheapest way to record guitar solos on to a backing track. I have a windows XP laptop with 512RAM. What I want is free software and a Mic with a USB plug. Is this possible?
Cheers!

Here are some USB mics but I don't think they come with software:

But I'd probably recommend:

The UX1 looks the best to me with the extra input.

Has plenty of amazing resources. A word from the wise is that you want to keep it simple and not jump in too deep with software.

I have tried to use my window xp laptop for recording, but the mic in really sucks.

What do you recommed for audio input instead of the mic in??

I found this but it is kind of expensive, isn't it??

Thanks for the Hit squad site B Hog.
I downloaded several programs recommended on
http://www.audiominds.com/ and liked n-Track Studio which is a complete large program instead of the others that are only a few MB's. It has a user guide which is quite easy to follow which others dont.
I haven't done much on it yet apart from importing some MP3 backing tracks into it and playing around editing them. I recorded my voice to see if it was recording OK thru the Mic. I only have a cheapo Phillips mike that I have had for about 20yrs so will mike up my amplifier when I get time and play with recording levels etc.

Hi One-Way & guys
Sorry to hijack the tread for a moment.

One-Way, did you ever get your OD-1 up a running again?

Dr Bob,
Yes it works well but I dont use it when Im playing at church with our worship band as the frequency doesnt match with the rest of the musicians and tends to be annoying. As we dont play super loud it gets lost in the mix. To be heard properly it has too be really loud.
Maybe you can recommend a overdrive/distortion that is not fizzy but has a deeper sort of sound. A clean sound cuts through so much easier in that setting.
