A music store near by has two worn MIJ DS-1 for sale at $99Cnd each. A steal compared to ebay prices. By looking at the serial numbers, would one be able to tell if one is better than the other (ie component change)or are all MIJ DS-1s considered good and only really changed later in Tiawan? I saw an atrical on how Boss structures the serial numbers, but remember where I saw it.

well, generally for collectors purposes, the older the better. as long as they are both in about the same condition, i would definately go for the older of the two. just out of curiosity, what city do you live in. dont worry im not a stalker.... |

They should both be identical but as Stratosphere said, the older pedal may give you more money back later if you decide to sell it.
There may be small differences like momentary LED, silver screw or long dash in DS-1 and these will usually sell for more. Also look for battery acid leakage, damage to the black label and the rubber grommet. For pedals made 1982-1988 the one in the best condition will probably be worth more money. |

Yah, I was thinking the same, older the better. Not too concerned about collectablity, more of to own a peice of that sound. I just saw an MIJ DS-1 on ebay for a slim 24.50 Might go with the one thats in better condition, thx for your input |

I prefer to go for older pedals myself as well, but as far as sound goes, the newer ones sound very similar. Sometimes the older ones sound even worse and really, it depends on the pedal, so in other words two DS-1's of the same productionyear will probably not sound the same. The differences will be very small and one has to ask him/herself how far you can go with all of this as a collector and player.
I know a lot of you here have done A/B tests and did buy similar pedals of different periods and it is fun to see that most of us all agree that the sounddifferences are really very marginal.
The prices for older pedals can be higher, but then you can also have some luck sometimes. |
