I'm in the market for a new delay pedal and I'd like to see what your experiences with the RE- and DD-20s are like.
I would like something that can pull off a warm analog-type tone, has tap tempo, and has the ability to do some pretty out there spacey stuff and store settings.
Thoughts on these two? |

I have both of them and like both a lot, but they are quite different. RE-20 is the most analog sounding, but there are settings on DD-20 doing this too.
RE-20 is really nice to do old time tape echo stuff with (this is of course the main use), very beautiful delays. There is a chorus-like effect due to the simulated wow and flutter of the modulated tape, lovely! You can tap tempo or oscillate (twist) with the right pedal, no memories. The oscillations created by twisting the repeat and rate knobs are really far out. To do more spacelike music, it´s possible (and usable) but a little like a one shot pony. Six seconds delay time maximum.
DD-20 is the most versatile delay on the market. Four memory slots, tap tempo, eleven (?) delay modes, maximum 23 seconds delay (the pedal can be tricked to do 46 seconds). There is a tape-imitation delay that sounds really cool. There is no way to create oscillation, just some flutterlike sounds. This is a great tool to produce ambient, looping and other flipped out music as well as it´s great for “ordinary” music. Great sound quality and time stability.
Of the two I would choose DD-20 without doubt, both if I had the money. If you play rockabilly or something like that RE-20 is the one to pick.
Read about them on the net, Harmony Central, www.rolandus.com etc
