Like so many of us here I have a PH-3, have had it since 2002 I have not used it all that much.

Over the last few weeks I have gone through all my phasers and looking for a certain sound and I had forgotten what the PH-3 can do and what is sounds like.

Okay compared to a classic four-stage phaser it may sound sterile and lacking in character, but it does have so much to offer that you can not really ignore the pedal.

I do have a PH-2 and the sound of the PH-2 is certainly in the PH-3 as it is quite characteristic.

I really like the rise mode, also like the step mode. Now try the stepmode combined with a delay, and match the time. This sound reminds me of a pitchshifter. Unique really and great for atmostpheric sounds, or even an intro on a straight down to rock song.

Also like its ability to set the time, but like on any of the other pedals, I tend not to use this much as setting times is not much of a trouble for me.

I guess the PH-3 can be seen as the BH-3, both of them are superpedals compared to the ones which preceeded them. Both pedals share unique sounds which cannot be found on any other pedals.

Using a PH-3 makes me feel I do not need a wah as the pedal can sound like an autowah.

Cutting down on the number of pedals to use for practical purposes is an ongoing issue for me, therefor I am glad I b to have "rediscovered" this gem in the bossrange.

I've loved my PH-3. The mode went bad & Roland gave me a new unit after it sat in their inbox a couple months. The different modes are pretty cool & I dig on the rise/fall. I don't use the effect for in your face jet whooshing sounds. Rather, I like it on gently in the background in a more subtle way.

Compared to my MF-103 MoogerFooger 12-stage Phaser, the PH-3 holds its own for usable sounds. But of course the MF is more versatile for exploring the wild canvas that is Moog.

See my post in this thread:

I use it for bass, and it's my favorite phaser among many others I tried (Boss and non-Boss).

I also like it a lot, my most used of the Boss phasers. Of course I love the sound of PH-1 but you can do so much more with PH-3, itīs a great machine for weird sounds!

I've got one, but it came with a broken-shafted right-hand pot.

Someday, I will repair it. Even with its disability, there are some fun sounds in there!

+1

The Rise and Fall modes are pretty unique sounding, as is the Step mode. I would personally default to a PH-1R for most of my phaser needs (or the PH-1 for higher-speed stuff) but the PH-3 is a really usable pedal in some applications.

I didn't like mine, and sold it on eBay last year. it was very versatile and almost completely noise-free, but too cold/digital-sounding IMHO.
