Hi, Im Confused about what to buy as a thrash distortion pedal. My options are a boss HM-2 or a marshall shredmaster. but any more suggestions would be helpful
P.S looking for a chuging treble type sound with a little low end |

| I like a Keeley modded Boss MT-2 for metal, but the shredmaster is a good pedal as well, and I have not played an HM-2 personally to judge that one. |

| IMO the hm-2 doesnt cut the mustard for thrash. try some different stuff, a shredmaster would be excelent though! |

Friday I've gone in my guitar shop to try a pedal very very hard and I've tried the MT2 and the ML2, IMHO the ML2 has more flexibility than MT2. The salesman told me about the MT2 with this (in)famous Keeley modify: what @£$& is this modify? I admit that the shop was full of customers and he was buzy, but he doesn't told me anything 'bout it. It's the fifth secret of Fatima? The secret lies still in the CIA archives 'till 2045? A sort of "There are things that you human race..."?
About HM2, I was one of the guilty... ehrm... precursor of what it was called Thrash Metal (a sort of melt of Iron Maiden, Venom, Black Sabbath and punk-rock a la' Ramones) and I was one of the firsts to used those pedal. What can I say? At the times it was a good choose, very hard, very... "rumble", but now 18/20 years later the "sound" has changed: ML2 it's better!
On the other side I don't know the Shredmaster. |

| I'd suggest the MI Audio Crunch Box. It's the best high gain sound you can get in a pedal for $120, in my humble opinion. :) |

Hey Timbo and Defrag
I'm not looking for recent pedals Like the ML-2 because To me it looks like its more for modern metal core musicians like Atreyu,Unearth,Comeback Kid,etc.
[i]but now 18/20 years later the "sound" has changed: ML2 it's better |

quote: Hi Fabius I don't mind that the sound has changed because i really hate change But like I said I'm Not looking for modern pedals
If you want the EXACT sound of the thrash metal of the begins you don't must use MT2, nor ML2 neither other pedals than pedals used in these times. My set-up was:
- The old Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer (that I've sold for few money and I still repent: sucker!); - Tons of Tokai chorus (I swear God: a cheap pedal); - DD3 for solos (I didn't like too much Delays, I've ever prefered Reverbs); - CS2 to sustain and raise volume during the solos (there wasn't the MXR M131 or similar pedals to gain volume without loss of distortion during the rhitmics); - A real ability to mix a good sound (with the amp or an EQ pedal); - Some group used to de-tune the guitars/bass in G or F... even C, but isnt' a good thing for the amplifiers; - For whom is a believer a pray to Saint Whistle the defensor of Feedback.
Then (mid 80s) there was HM2 and other pedals born for thrash! So make your choose.

MT-2. unless you want to turn louder than bedroom level.
in my own experience, i find using two pedals is best for metal. as long as you keep both distortions rather low and keep "tone" on the trebley side you wont get mud. my setup for metal is a SD-1 into a MD-2 followed by a EH-2 and finally a GE-6. i keep the MD-2 "gain 1" knob at noon and dont even use "gain 2". i use my SD-1 gain at about noon as well. i find that using two pedals set at half gives you a more real sound than one distortion.
in the past ive used almost every pedal by Boss and really anything can be used. it really helps if you can get an EQ running after it.
now the tricky part is the GE-6. no matter what i did with my GE-7 i couldnt get rid of the mud so i tried my GE-6 and for some reason it seems to not affect your tone as much. only problem is that they are pretty tricky to find. (but for some reason still pretty cheap if you can find one). |

Hi stratosphere Good idea I'll use my DS-1 and then go into the shredmaster (unfortunatly I decided already and a lot of you think the HM-2 is more for the Bass) so i'll just buy That for my bass rig |

Interesting StratoSphere; Has anyone else noticed this when comparing a GE-7 to a GE-6?(If you're lucky enough to have both to A/B) Personally, I think the trade-off between better tone w/the GE-6 and the extra frequency adjustment w/the GE-7... GE-6 is the way to go.
Alas, I only have a GE-7 so I can't compare the two but hopefully we can get a few more opinions on this.
Sorry if this is changing the original topic. |

i find that the only downfall of the GE-6 is that theres no master volume slider so this can be a negative for some. although thats pretty easy to work around.
i heard that its supposed to be noisier than the GE-7 too but i havent really noticed any extra noise. ill try em out later to see. |
