How do I get a low-end boost in my sound? I need to
get a good/beefy metal sound (Lamb of God, The
Haunted, Nevermore, Testament) but my amp (Peavey
Transtube head through 5150 cab) doesn't have enough
low-end. I use a Rocktron Silver Dragon or a Boss
Metal Zone for distortion. To me, it seems my
distortion is a bit thin with either pedals. What
effect could I add to boost the bass? I've tried an the
GE-7 EQ but that didn't seem to help my problem. I'd
appreciate any suggestions.

Well.. I don't know your amp, but here's a few suggestions that've worked fine for me and other people i've done gigs with:

DS-1 with tone around 10 o clock, level at max and dist around 2-3 o clock.

SD-1 with a subtle hint of drive, tone in the middle and level at -whereever-you'd-like.

The clue is not to turn up your distortion to much, this makes your sound thin and hizzy (furthermore you disappear in bands "soundbox").
Try turning down the dist., or a DS-1. This pedal is very underestimated, IMHO.
DS-1 or SD-1 (Maybe at BD-2) is usually my choice of arms for what I think you're describing...

Actually, I love my MT-2. I'd like to keep that as my distortion but I just need something else that could add a beefier low-end to the sound.

this is what i use to cover the song Hourglass by Lamb Of God, and various others by similar bands (As I Lay Dying, Arch Enemy, etc)

this is my personal recipe for a metal tone that is humongous and feels like its dropkicking you in the torso.

i use a Agile Flying V into these pedals and into a Kustom II Lead, 60 watt combo.

MT-2 - Low EQ cranked, High EQ about 1 oclock, Middle at 12oclock, Mid Freq. at 0. level and distortion as desired although it sounds best with DIST almost cranked.

GE-6 or GE-7. i prefer the GE-6 as it doesnt seem to color your sound at all but they are quite harder to find than the GE-7. i use the EQ to "scoop" the sound, meaning the bass and treble are enhanced, but the mids are left alone or even supressed. the sliders on your GE-7 should look like a "V" shape.

EH-2 - now heres the secret to getting rid of that damn buzzing hissy MT-2 crap. if only everyone who complained about the MT-2 being too thin could try this. im not saying it will work for everyone but with my setup it makes the MT-2 sound like a dream (or nightmare cuz its metal)
Mix - 9 oclock
Freq - 9 oclock
Sens - set high.

remember these are just my suggestions and it WILL sound slightly different through your setup.

now for the other secret. this amp setting makes the bass sound huge. i beleive this is called the "Power Amp" setting. i turn the master volume to about 9. and turn the channel volume to about 1.5 (2 if i mean it!) it makes your amp sound huge even at very low settings.

well i hope this helped in some way, good luck, and turn down after 11 pm.

Hi warrlokk

Does your guitar have humbuckers?
Does your amp have a fully sealed back on the speakers?
Are you using at least a sealed back 2 by 12" or 4 by 12"

This will go a long way towards real bottom end.
If your using a guitar with single coils or a stacked single & a combo amp 1/3 open back amp,
You will be fighting a bit of a loosing battle.

You asked a question, without really telling us what your setup is.
So in a way, as good as all the advice I have read so far is, it's just really conjecture.

Tell us your setup, because we all really want to help you & others.

And StratoSphere
What a great use for the EH-2
I just got mine last Sat. & am looking forward to trying it out.
And a really old for Australia anyway, DS-1 with the TA7136AP OpAmp.

Regards Dr Bob

i also forgot to mention that the MT-2 sounds best when played into a clean amp. clean medium gain pickups help too. i find the high output humbuckers are just too much with the MT-2. the bridge pickup is better for palm mutes and definition. i dont know theres 101 tricks to get the metal tone that you will pick up here and there. lots of trial and error.

Dr Bob has a good point. humbuckers will really help. same with a closed back amp. but like i said, the "power amp" thing is a huge step if you want more bass.

-Gibson Flying V with EMG active humbuckers
-Peavey Transtube head
-Peavey 5150 4x12 fully sealed back
-Rocktron Silver Dragon or Boss MT-2 (I use both but not simulaneously)
