Hey Forum,
I was just reading Gorans post and he said that he saw Hendrix play behind his back. I have only else seen Hendrix and SRV do this or play behind their neck....
What percentage of guitar players can do this? Any others?

I've seen a friend of mine play a fretless bass solo behind his neck/head, it was a long time ago so I can't remember if it actually sounded any good. |

| I've done it with a Gretsch hollowbody...don't do it much anymore. Obviously my playing will be a lot sloppier behind my head, not to mention the fear of dropping the guitar altogether...it's a nice little crowd-pleaser(some people will cheer for anything!) but not something I care to do very often. |

| I have tried it.it is not really that hard playing in a box pattern. but putting the guitar in that position is a real problem |

Saw a guitarist do it a folk festival a fair few years ago.
The band were Cat Sratch Fever (I think??)
Lots of the other musicians from other acts were watching from the side of the stage too.
The band then went into a superb version of Motorhead's Ace Of Spades.
Yes it was a folk festival! |

| Anyone else seen the Sadies from Canada? The 2 guitarists, Dallas and Travis Good, do one number where they play the others neck; great guitarists, particularly Travis, and fantastic live. |

Neah, it makes for a good laugh.
Music is all about showbizz, right?
People want to see something happening onstage as well
as hear the music.
I've seen the trend go towards that at least, shitty bands with cool onstage performance are more popular than wooden planks with amazing playing. |

I always thing of the late Les Paul's comment when he was talking about the time he made his first solidbody guitar back in the 30's....it was called the Log and no one paid it any notice so he decided to put sides on it to make it look like a regular guitar... after he did this and it began to get noticed he made the comment about ....."people hearing with their eyes."...
I agree with Dirk...we like to put on a bit of a show as well as play so we do a johnny cash/elvis 50's sun studio type medley on some of the gigs and our singer goes into the elvis vegas era karate moves in parts ..it gets a great reaction... i usually keep the behind the head stuff for special occasions like new years eve but most audiences get bored easily so now and again it's good to pull something out of the bag of tricks...i also liked The_Doc's video on youtube where their singer gave out inflatable guitars to the audience and had a air guitar competition with a couple of people... ...we also sometimes do the version of 'mustang sally' out of the committments movie and we normally get two or three girls up to do the 'ride sally ride' bit on the chorus....makes for a fun night.... |
