Dr. Bob brought up a while back in a previous thread that some of the CE-5's were digital and some were analog...
i was wondering... what year did this happen? how do you tell the difference?
thanks |

cool.
i helped a local shop i know well sell a guitar for $800+ (that they thought was worth $200) and they hooked me up with some cash for helping. i could tell they needed the cash though so i accepted a CE-5 + $10 instead. |

Hi zentropa
What kind/type of guitar was it? So I gather that your new CE-5 is an analog one with the MN3007 BBD IC & clock driver?
Please let ossarea know the serial & it it was MIT or MIJ. It will help narrow the dates & serial, where the change over to digital occurred.
Regards & thanks Dr. Bob |

it was a USA kramer baretta I w/ dennis kline "samurai" styled art finish.
it's an MIT dark grey label, SN KO21153 dates at jan 2001.
it has the MN3007
was the change an ROHS compliance thing? or just cheaper/easier to do digi?
did the CH-1 have a similar transition? |

| The change predates RoHS. I think the change was made because it was harder to get hold of BBDs but I'm not perfectly sure about that. The CH-1 and CE-5 designs changed at the same time. |

| So, is that why at times I get some (digital ?) distortion on my current CE5, but never did on my old 1990's model. |

That would be true - too much input into the new CE-5 and digital distortion will result (just like a modern delay pedal). |

Does anybody know if the label on back [depending on the color] would be an indicator if it's analog or digital?
For example, dark gray would be all the post digital date, or pink is all analog. Is that the way it works? I want to find an analog CE-5, I'm not good with serial numbers so I hope somebody has figured out the colors and which they represent. |

Yes, you're perfectly right. All digital CE-5s has dark gray label. Analog CE-5s will have pink or dark gray labels. |
