Hi Guys Today I stared to build up a MXR Dyna Comp Clone I have heard great things about these compressors. So I wanted to see for myself. Any input & comments welcome.
I thought you guys might be interested in the steps & progress of my small project.
All done, during my coffee & lunch breaks.
Progress so far: (2) weeks ago I bought the MXR size case & similar knobs. Still have to buy the pots, I didn't have the parts list with me...
Today Wed 28th Mar. I did a Press n Peel artwork, I did about 6 of them. I managed to get the Press n Peel to actually work. I touched up the tracks that didn't transfer properly, with a black felt, fine tip, marker pen. I etched (2) fiberglass PCB's in Ammonium Persulphate solution. (5 to 1 solution). I drilled out (1) of the etched PCB's --Component holes 0.8mm & the wire & PWR diode holes are 1.0mm I cut them to size with a 32 teeth per inch fine bladed hacksaw. I then cleaned off the Press n Peel resist & Tinned the PCB.
Loaded up about 75% of the components on the board.
Paused here --- Stay tunned for the next installment.
Regards Dr. Bob

Hi Bossarea Of course not, I was doing this during my lunch & tea-breaks.
Do you call them "foreigners' over there in the UK as well, In the US they are called Swedish Naval projects (there's no Swedish Navy.. )
But now that you asked, I will post some up.

Ok Guys & Bossarea Here are some of the pictures that I wasn't originally taking. Bossarea convinced me otherwise. If they don't manage to upload here, in this post, I will PM them to Bossarea, so that he can post them up for me.
Pics of: The PCB. The Components. Drilling out the case.
Yes that's the lid of a blue wheelie rubbish bin, I was over at our heavy metal (not the head banging type) workshop. Dad was working on one of his larger project, so it was the only bench space left.
The Metal workshop, belongs to my father.
He's a bit like going to visit "The MythBusters" If he doesn't yet have one ---- He'll just build it. We drilled out the case, after we had some Easter Lunch.
He always has a bit of fun with me, because, a REAL, Engineering Project, weighs at least than a couple of tons
But he still loves getting involved. Things like, he has to pre-sharpen every drill bit, before I get to use it. And all the hardware (Pots & Switches) HAVE to be measured with a Metric only Vernier.
He keeps telling me, that real Men-(Engineers) don't use a Dial Vernier, dial verniers are for sissy's. I then remind him of my failing eyesight.
After all the taunting, we get on with it, then go have a coffee.
BTW, I showed him the Pic, of that Monster RED Boss pedal doorway, at a Boss convention. And he said, "Now I could build that "
Regards Dr. Bob
Ok Guys - Sorry No Pics, I keep getting the timeout error msg. I will PM them to Bossarea.
I've just sent them to Bossarea.

Hi Dirk It's one of the Custom Overdrive-Distortion pedals that we make. It has a custom designed circuit, that uses, No Op Amps and No clipping diodes, that you find in most commercial pedals. That one in the pic, is the very first one that I built, so it's showing some signs of use. It's now about 7 years old.
Yes, I will be giving the Dyna Comp Clone case, a paint job, maybe next weekend. But I think I like the purple colour, that was on Kulten's Ring Modlator, pedal mock up. http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2382&whichpage=3
Then I still have to CAD a metal foil front label for it.
This is a work in progress, and I thought you guys might like to see it all happens?
Thanks for the feedback.
Maybe I should start a poll (thread) so you guys can all vote for which colour, you want me to paint the prototype? I think that would be a good idea.
I'm just not too sure, how we would judge it, and then appoint a winner & winning colour.
Tell me what you guys think about having a: Dr. Bob's Dyna Comp Clone - Colour Competition.
Regards Dr. Bob

my vote goes toward the purple Ring Modulator, but more dynamic (sry for the pun) looking like metallic, or if you want go crazy... go to a autobody paint shop and get it coated with that paint that 'shifts' color depending on how you look at it not too crazy about the pink knobs, but white lettering definetly
When do expect to go into mass production? |

Hi ChristoMephisto Thanks for the Purple Vote, I was thinking a Metalic or sparkle Purple as well. I guess we sort of think along the same lines. The front label will be made in a Silver metalic foil.
Any Idea's as to how we go about selecting a winner & winning colour?
I was really just looking to make one Compressor, I wasn't thinking about mass production. I am starting to run into minor mechanical problems, like the case I managed to get from my supplier, is about 2mm smaller internally, that the Hammond die cast case. It's making it hard to fit the current PCB. I might have to get a Hammond case & re-drill all the holes. I'll also have to rewire the PBC, with thinner wires, because of the slightly smaller case.
The Bypass foot switch arrived today.
I think the Auto body paint you are thinking about is called a Pearl finish, it's basically sort of White, and when you move it around, it changes like mother-of-pearl, into may other rainbow like colours.

Thats the colour i was thinking of, slick looking. A Mother of Pearl effect Are you giving teh pedal a unique name too?
Was only kidding about mass production, i already know how long it takes to mod a pedal, building one would be time consuming.
Cant wait to see more pics, use your 'persuader' to get it to fit together. That hammer with the flat end would do the trick. If it doesn't fit, force it, if it breaks, it needed replacing away |

Hi ChristoMephisto First of all pls check your PM. I don't use 'The Persuader' any more, I now like Jack -- 'Jack Hammer' I now have everything, except 'time' to finish the project. I have all the parts, inc. the foot-switch, & it all fits, I had to file down, the PCB, as my case is a bit narrower internally, compared to the Hammond & Retex cases.
Making the PCB from scratch, took the most time.

Looking good there Dr Bob, Sorry I never did get back to you with better PCB pics like I promised, email me if you still need any specific pics/info, though looks like you're well on the way now.
'The Persuader' makes me laugh, I knew a guy who would 'fix' anything on a bike with a hammer and screwdriver, of course you wouldn't want him working on your bike Saying that I just re-wired my guitar, and what a mess, I need soldering practice, and lots of it. |

Hi ToneDeaf (John)
Thanks for the nice comment & support.. I have some more pics of it, to upload, maybe a bit later, I also took the pics, that I promised I would for you. Just have to get them out of the camera..
I would love some pics of the insides of your New-Old Dyna Comp. does it have a black plastic 8 pin chip, similar to a JRC4558, or does it have a small round metal can with 8 legs?
Regards Dr. Bob |

Hi Bossarea & guys Here are four more pics, of the Dyna Comp Clone. The unit is now functional & sounds great. Yes I know the wiring is a bit of a mess.
Still to do: Paint job - I might paint it Pearl White. Front panel label or lettering. Fit a 3mm blue or green high brightness LED. Plastic insulator for the PCB.
Thanks for all your great feedback & support.
Regards Dr. Bob
