I have often heard that there can be differences to your sound based on which of these you use, but have never really thought much of it until I picked up Tele #4, a Squier Standard Black & Chrome Telecaster.
I set the bridge pickup to the exact same height as the bridge pickups on my 3 Squier Standard Fat Teles, and it sounded good, but it was not balanced with the neck pickup. The neck pickup height cannot be adjusted without removing the pickguard, so I just wanted to try lowering the bridge pickup, but was thinking it would end up sounding bad. I lowered the bridge pickup to about the same height as the pickup mounting screws, and achieved balance between the neck and bridge pickups. To my surprise, the bridge pickup still sounds good even after being lowered so much, so I was thinking that the only difference between the bridge pickups on my Fat Teles and this one is the pot size (unless they are using a different cap... ). According to Squier specs, the Fat Teles use 500k pots, and the regular Teles use 250k pots. Since the 500k pot has more resistance than a 250k pot, is that why I have the different bridge pickup heights between my Fat Tele with a neck humbucker and 500k pots, and the Black and Chrome that has a single coil neck pickup and 250k pots? Thats what my guess is, as I have always heard that single coil pickups should use 250k pots, and humbuckers should use 500k pots, but on the Fat Tele, a 500k pot is used for both single coil and humbucker pickups.
Any thoughts or opinions about this would be apprciated. Thanks |

| All I know is the higher the pot value, the more treble comes through. |

Hi Jack - Defrag & Guys
One my 90's MIJ 52RI TELE, they use 1 Meg pots for both. And it has, all original electronics.
(I took some pics awhile ago, if you are interested) but it's just pics of old pots...
And Defrag is correct, the higher value pots place LESS load on the pickup coils, which in theory doesn't roll off the high frequencies as much.
Does anyone else have 1 Meg pots on their setup-s?
Regards Dr. Bob

I put 500k pots in my tele 'cause i thought the duncan pickups in it were a bit muddy sounding(a hot rails in the bridge and a hot tele stack in the front) i even put a coil spilt in to try to get more 'twang' but i'm starting to think the only way to get that 'twang' is to put some original fender single coil pickups in it..i've been reading up on pick ups and there is a school of thought out there that the more winds on the bobbin to make the pickup 'hotter' boosts the midrange and affects the bass and treble..i think thats where seymour went wrong with these ones ....
Dr Bob.....those pots seem to have a very high value for a single coil guitar...... i always thought that fender used 250k pots in their strats and teles....??...one of your countrymen a guy called chris kinman has a good website where he has some theorys about pots and pickups ..worth a look....... |

Hi Franzoni
1 Meg pots or not. You have to hear my Tele It's a 92-93 MIJ, 52RI, Ash, Honey Blonde (Hence the Blondie Name) vintage pickups - with all cloth wire.
Not a mark on it. few players pick it from the real American deal, until they spot the MIJ serial on the back of the necks heel. And the finish is way better. Sound real good & Tele-ish to my old ears.
I can't really tell you if this was the standard configuration from the factory back In the 90's, but it sure all looks original. Like I said before, I took some pics of the back of the control plate.
Does anyone else here have a MIJ or USA 52RI from that eara?

Hi Doc
Steve Cropper the famous guitar player from Booker T and the MG's and Blues Brothers fame used to be a tele player until he went with peavey..one of his stories was playing a MIJ tele on gigs and when people came up to him afterwards to ask what year it was,he loved flipping it over to show them where it said 'Made in Japan'...everyone expecting it to be a original 50's tele..... i've said it in other posts, one of my biggest regrets is selling my jap '62 strat and not getting my hands on my friends '57 one when he sold his...... |
