Kulten, a little question about your new bass: Are the pickups active or passive? Thanks Joske |

Kulten, have you ever tried nylon wound strings on your fretless?
Hey Witloof, I use nylon flat wound strings on my fretless... I love the sound (a little more like a double bass) and the feel is much nicer when you're sliding up and down the neck. Plus they are black = looks cool.
Many fretless bass players use these. They sound good, but I was wondering whether you could still get a decent slap sound. I only use my bass for playing funk/soul/pop, I have a double bass for the more jazzy stuff. (I would recommend any bass player to learn to play double bass). |

Is that hard compared to a Bass guitar? I mean, I'm not particularly good at fretless to start off with and I'd be lost without the fretlines (I have a cheating fretless with lines where the frets would be)... I'd love to learn double bass - it sounds *very* cool (plus I could wear a beret and hang out in Jazz clubs performing 8 minute beat poems!)
Can you get a decent quality double bass cheaply or is it quite expensive?
Oh, and I don't think you can get a good slap sound with Nylon strings... or maybe It's just me - I always use my fretted bass for slap. I'm certain I've seen Les Claypool play slap on a fretless, but I think he uses metal strings?

Hey Joske, it's a shame you're so far away... we could have shared resources while learning double bass! |

| I do prefer electric fretless bass, I'm not much good with double bass. A friend of mine got one, funny just a few minutes then I go back to my electric bass. |

I started at fretted bass and eventually went for double bass. It involves more physical work than electric bass, but you get used to that. The neck is much fatter & thicker than a normal bass. The radius is much smaller, so you can use a bow (which sounds pretty cool).
You can learn to play double bass on an electric double bass, which is a lot cheaper (250, used) than a normal 'study instrument' (somewhere around 3000). Professional basses are way to expensive, prices around 7000 here in Belgium. |

At first, I was a Jazzbass fan, but lately I'm starting to like the old fat P sound. |
