Good advice.... i was on the late shift so i was a little fuzzy this morning...
You done the right thing in walking away DasBeef..i've been lucky to play a few vintage guitars in my time.some were beauts but out of my price range and some were complete planks..if it doesn't feel right or float your boat ..walk away...... |

Glad you kept your head about you!! Some of the things you describe could definitely be a vintage instrument with some interesting history. It's too bad the pics weren't so hot, but it appeared pretty accurate to me. Keep us posted on your next find though!!
a few weeks ago I got to do some detective work to figure out the age of a nice old player ES-75. We thought it was late, at first, but it turned out to be a '52 (as per the very early pots) which had been repaired and oversprayed after '65 - this guitar had no label as well.. |

Better to skip it then dumping all your savings in a piece of firewood. Good luck finding another guitar. |

| You TOTALLY did the right thing by walking away - it's always a tough thing to do when its something you really fancy, but if there is the smallest amount of doubt then you should always walk - especially with second hand axes. There will always be something better that comes along, or you can just save more beer tokens and get something new, without the worry ! |

| Yeah thanks. Still think I made the right decision, but a little gutted it wasn't one that just suited me perfect. I have been in contact with the guy on eBay about his one, but as he lives in Chumleigh, it's a bit tough to nip round to try it out. He's sent me a stink load of pictures of it, and it all looks good. Just don't think I'll be able to put a bid in without actually holding it. Not unless it was an outrageously good deal in my favour.... |

Hi DasBeef..I know this might be of little consolation to you but i genuinely believe that prices haven't hit rock bottom yet on a lot of this stuff and while something with the legend Gibson on the headstock will always fetch a premium,i still think if you have the cash,to hold off till after christmas as sometime i find at the beginning of a new year you sometimes see a lot of stuff coming on the market..from new year resolution gear clearouts or the bills starting to come through the door i don't know, but it might be a better time to do a deal if you are a cash customer...i can't say this too may times to you bro'.......Cash is King.....in any of these deals.... |

| Hey Beef don't know if anyone said this yet, though you may have walked away from this one in the future if you find one you like you said you didn't think the guy would like you taking a screwdriver to a guitar you hadn't bought yet, in my opinion if he is trying to unload a vintage guitar worth several thousand dollars he better get to liking it! As a buyer you have a right to verify you are getting what you are paying for if the dude resists you checking the pickup and pot codes that would raise red flags to me, if he just wants a qualified tech to take it apart I can understand and you may have to negotiate who pays for the service though IMO if it's a high dollar guitar the seller should. Good luck bro. |

If it was a vintage Les Paul or 335 and i was paying several big ones for it i would be in total agreement FG and i would defo go to a luthier and have the pots checked out for dates etc and if the buyer was getting iffy i would start smelling a rat... ... but this guitar was £1800...not much more than the price of a new ES-335 and a helluva lot cheaper than some of Gibsons vintage re-issue 335's,i just can't see someone going to that much trouble to relic a late 60's ES- 335 to sell it for that amount of money.....the sad fact is not all vintage guitars are good and some of the quality control by Gibson and Fender in the late 60's/early 70's was very questionable as both were owned by big companies(Norlin and CBS) driven by profit and dividends to shareholders..i'm more of a Fender guy and i've played quite a few 70's strats and teles,IMHO the teles escaped most of the QC issues during the CBS years at Fender.....Gibson are still renowned for having some QC issues and there is a story that their CEO went along the production line a few years back checking LP's for any issues and ended up smashing one off the floor in front of the workers over QC or for effect to get the staff to up their game..to which end i'm not sure but it highlights the problems still there.... |
